It's Friday!
I was visiting classrooms last week and happened to step into a class that was reviewing their recent assessment. The students did a wonderful job, but many were surprised that they did not do better. As I listened to the class discussion, I realized many students did not utilize the strategies they had been taught. After seeing their scores, they were disappointed in themselves.
At that point in the conversation, I felt compelled to join the discussion. I asked, “How many of you want to be successful?” Everyone raised their hand! I then asked, “How many of you wake up in the morning, look in the mirror and tell yourself that today is going to be the worst day of my life, and I will do anything to make it that way?” No one raised their hand! The discussion moved from what I should have done to what I am going to do.
The bottom line is…everyone likes to win…everyone likes to be successful. Who determines that? We do! In order to be successful, we have to maintain a certain momentum and stamina…we can teach our children to do the same. First of all, you have to believe in what you’re doing and believe it will make a difference. Secondly, you must maintain confidence…you must remind yourself that you can achieve success. You then must believe that you will be a success and reach your goals…that is called determination…refusing to be distracted by whatever comes your way. In addition, you must make it a point to be motivated…to be optimistic. This is often done by simply saying, “I can do it!” Lastly, you must be aware. Awareness is knowing that things will come your way and will try to pull you down, but because you know this, you are prepared.
OUR STUDENTS can accomplish amazing things! Let’s be the ones to help them reach amazing levels of success!
Have a great weekend!!!

Attendance
Improving attendance at Three Lakes Middle School is a top priority this school year. There is a direct correlation between student attendance and school success, so encourage your students to attend school and discuss the importance of them being here daily.
Our attendance for the week is as follows:
Grade 6: 94.25%
Grade 7: 93.73%
Grade 8: 96.40%
Overall: 94.81%
Congratulations to our 8th graders for having the highest attendance this week!!! Continue motivating your students to attend school...it makes a difference!!!
Here are some helpful hints to help with attendance:
- Establish and stick to the basic routines (going to bed early, waking up on time, etc.) that will help your child develop the habit of on-time attendance.
- Talk to your child about why going to school every day is critical and important unless they are sick. If your child seems reluctant to go to school, find out why and work with the teacher, counselor, or administrator to get them excited about going to school.
- Come up with back up plans for who to turn to (another family member, a neighbor or fellow parents) to help you get your child to school if something comes up (e.g. another child gets sick, your car breaks down, etc.).
- Reach out for help if you are experiencing tough times (e.g. transportation, unstable housing, loss of a job, health problems) that make it difficult to get your child to school. Other parents, your child’s teacher, principal, social worker, school nurse, counselor, or community agencies can help you problem solve or connect you to a needed resource.
- If your child is absent, work with the teacher to make sure she or he has an opportunity to learn and make up for the academics missed.
