Updates:
1. SAISD Disability Services HB 1416 Guidance is here!
Highlights:
HB 1416 requires the Accelerated Instruction Plan to be in place for students who did not pass the STAAR test.
An ARD committee may be convened if the committee feels that a student’s individualized education program (IEP) may need to be modified based on the accelerated and supplemental instruction requirements, but it is not required.
If an ARD committee is not convened, the Local Education Agency will use the same processes and procedures for a student with an IEP as it does with all other students.
The ARD committee must then review the student’s participation and progress at the student’s next annual review meeting,

October is AAC Awareness Month!
Any person whose disability makes it difficult for them to communicate may benefit from Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). AAC allows individuals to express their wants, needs, and ideas and to participate in their lives more fully. AAC also benefits families, providing a way for them to communicate with their loved to a greater extent.
- Ask your campus Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) or SLP Assistant about alternative and augmentative ways of communicating.
- Learn about AAC Devices Fast Facts as well as Supporting AAC in the Classroom.
- Print and share this AAC Tips for Implementation flipbook with family members to help support them in feeling comfortable implementing AAC.
International Stuttering Awareness Day
International Stuttering Awareness Day is observed annually on October 22. Stuttering is a communication disorder in which repetitions — or abnormal stoppages of sounds and syllables — break the flow of speech. There may also be unusual facial and body movements associated with speaking. This condition is also variable, meaning that the severity of the stutter is inconsistent. Some days a person might only stutter a few times while others the stutter may affect most of their interactions.
Stuttering is a fairly low-incidence speech disorder, with about 1% incidence. Listeners’ reactions to stuttering can make interactions difficult for people who stutter. If people become more aware of stuttering, a conversation with a person who stutters may not take them off guard. Respectful ways of responding are to keep eye contact, have patience, and engage in communication.
