Cedar Reader Remote Learning
Week of April 27, 2020
Message From the Principal
As we continue into week 3 of Phase 3, I hope you are finding a school routine and some sense of work-life balance.
We will continue to take attendance this week. Students will be counted as attending through participation in any number of activities:
- loads a collaboration to view/edit the document
- joins a web conference
- posts a new comment to a discussion or an announcement
- submits a quiz
- starts taking a quiz
- attends office hours
- submits work/assignments
We continue to get questions about remote learning. Below we will address some of the most recent questions.
Why aren't teachers doing "live" lessons?
Teachers have been directed by the district to make their lessons and classwork asynchronous to ensure the most equitable access for all students. Every family is navigating a different situation, and not all students can log on to a live session at the same time. Secondary teachers work with 100+ students, which makes it impossible to have all students attend a class at the same time. Finally, like you, are managing their own family needs and schedules and may need to do work at different times each day.
My student needs more work; I want her/him to be busy for more time.
Core teachers are required to plan for 2 lessons that each equal 45-60 minutes of time each week. Elective teachers plan for 1 lesson that equals 45-60 minutes of learning time. Many teachers are providing more than that, but we are finding that students are often skipping parts of the lessons/work, or even turning in blank pages. Ask to see your student's work before she/he submits it. Also, there are many additional resources and learning opportunities available on our district website that you can assign your student. We are working to add more directly to our school website.
My student has questions and needs to talk to her/his teacher. What can she/he do?
Teachers have office hours every day and are available "live" during that time. Students can also call their teacher's classroom via the school main line and directory (503.356.2560). If the teacher does not answer, leave a message and the teacher will call back.
When can I pick up my student's belongings?
In the next few weeks you will receive dates and details on pick up procedures. Each school is developing a plan as needed depending on building and staff availability.
Thank you for staying engaged with your student's education. We all know how challenging this situation is in many ways, and we are committed to mitigating learning loss as best we can.
I hope you have a great week, and all your family is safe and well.
Best,
Dr. Anderson
