Honor others, more than yourselves.
Perfect attendance awards, season ending soccer medals, MVP, 1st place, 1st chair, honor roll...we have a lot of awards for great accomplishments. Football teams decorate the back of their helmets with stickers to acknowledge the accomplishments the player has made throughout the season. We have the race for the Heisman, awarded annually to the most outstanding player in NCAA football. Literature has the Caldecott honors that recognize the most distinguished picture book. Our country has the prestigious Medal of Honor, the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force in the branches of the military.
When God called us through the words of Paul in the book of Romans to "Love one another deeply. Honor others more than ourselves," (Romans 12:10 NIrV) is this ribbons, medals, and helmet stickers?
Reggie Joiner put it this way, "Honor is about a quality of virtue, not the quantity of accomplishments. When we define honor that way, it doesn’t come and go with seasons of approval and distress. When we honor people because of who they are instead of what they have done, honor becomes a permanent attitude, an enduring way of regarding someone with hope and respect."
It is wonderful and good to be proud of our children's accomplishments. But let's not stop at honoring one another at the accomplishment alone and let's work to honor the people they are becoming. Through these moments, we can honor God by giving God the credit for creating such beautiful and talented children. Let us as parents challenge ourselves to honor our children and teach them that honor is valuing the people around us for who they are, not just what they have done.
We can practice this by honoring our children by honoring the present moment when we are with them and putting our phone down to be present in the moment with them. When we post a picture on social media, we can teach our children that how many likes the picture gets does not determine the value of the picture. The picture had value well before it was uploaded. When our child wins an award, we can celebrate that moment and be proud of the accomplishment, while also praising God and giving Him the credit.
Join us this month as we practice what it means to honor everyone for their value not just their accomplishments .
Try This . . .
In the Morning . . .
On the Move...
Show honor to one another by honoring the present moment by being present. Make it a point this month to hold each other accountable to to be with one another and fully present this month. Maybe the challenge will be riding in the car together with no electronic devices. Or enjoy an outdoor activity together, enjoying the moment with each other and not taking pictures to post on Instagram. Try enjoying a movie together where the focus is on honoring the moment by being present with who are with instead of multi-tasking. Brainstorm ways you can honor one another by honoring the present moment and decide together which challenges of honor you would like to accept!
In Prayer...
Talk with your child about how prayer can be a time to honor God by giving him the credit for the blessings we have in life. Even in times of distress, we can honor God for being faithful to us by never leaving our side. Talk with your kid about a time that you have found it easy to honor God and times when it has been more challenging.
Dear God,
We give you all the glory and honor for the abundance of blessings you have placed in our lives. We especially want to give you the credit for [child's name]. We pray that you will let [him/her] feel honored and valued because you have created [him/her] unique and worthy. We love [child's name]. We want to show you honor by also naming some other people that we honor and value. Thank you for (pause and allow your child to identify some valuable people and why they are valuable). May we show these people honor because they are so valuable to us. Help us God, to show Your love to others by loving them deeply and honoring them more than ourselves. We honor you God and give you all the credit. In Jesus honorable name. Amen.
