Superintendent's Message Superintendent's Message

zoom_out_map

It's hard to believe that in a few short days, we will welcome our students and staff back to our buildings for the second half of the school year! I hope the holidays have provided you and your family with many moments of happiness and plenty of opportunities to enjoy time with those that matter most.

As we prepare to turn our calendars to 2024, I hope you are all feeling rested, restored, and ready to achieve great things. The new year is a time to set new goals and think about improvements we can make to our lives. It’s also a time to reflect on how far we’ve come in the last year, both as a team and individually, and to express appreciation for those who have made a difference along the way.

January is National School Board Recognition Month. Here at Midview Local School District, we are fortunate to have an incredibly supportive Board of Education that always places students first when making decisions. Serving as a link between residents and the classroom, school board members are elected to establish the policies that provide the framework for public schools.

Board members currently serving are Kathy Quintiliano (President), Janet Winslow (Vice President), Dan Haight (Member), Tom Tomasheski (Member), and our newly elected member, Jim Onderko, who has replaced Gary Wilson following his retirement after thirty-two faithful years of service. These dedicated individuals bring a variety of perspectives and strengths gained through their personal experiences, education, careers, and service to the Midview community.

They play a vitally important role in ensuring local control over our schools, control that is in the hands of people we know - people who are our neighbors. Our Board works closely with parents, education professionals, and community members to create the educational vision we want for our students. It formulates goals, defines results, and sets the course for adequate and equitable educational programming for all students. Please join me in celebrating our Board's important role in our district and our community!

Happy (almost) New Year, Middies! I know we will continue to find success together in 2024.

Take care,

Dr. Willingham

New Classroom-Level Communication Tool

Beginning in February, Midview Local Schools will introduce a new teacher-to-parent communication platform called Rooms!

Integrated with our Midview App, Rooms will streamline classroom-level communication from grade to grade by replacing applications such as Class Dojo and Remind. Rooms allows parents/guardians to access class-specific announcements/updates and directly message teachers all in one location.

More information will be shared in the following weeks about when parent/guardian invites will be sent out and when teachers will begin utilizing Rooms. In the meantime, please download the Midview Local Schools App (if you haven't already!), available for free from the Apple App Store or on Google Play.

Winter Break Projects

Midview Local School District is thankful for the men and women who work each day to care for our buildings and grounds - our Maintenance Department! From cleaning to repairing, installing to mowing, their commitment to maintaining a campus that our staff, students, and community can take pride in never waivers.

Over Winter Break, our maintenance staff has been working hard to complete the following projects:

  • HVAC maintenance at the high school and elementary buildings
  • Installing front-of-the-house LED lights with a mixing board for the high school stage
  • Converting North's and East's gym lighting to LED (West was completed before the start of school)
  • Installing wireless microphone systems inside all North, West, and East multi-purpose rooms for use during plays, concerts, and assemblies
  • Installing sanitary dispensers in every women's restroom in East Intermediate, the middle school, and high school. All dispensers and FREE products were funded through a $10,000 Future Forward Grant awarded to Midview Local Schools.
  • Converting the high school business classroom into a state-of-the-art computer lab for our Business and Marketing Pathway. All technology installed, including interactive touchscreen computers and wireless mouses and keyboards, was funded through a career-technical grant.

High School MEMS Pathway in the News

Over the last several weeks, our High School Micro-electromechanical Systems (MEMS) Program has continued to receive state-wide recognition, featuring on WKYC and Channel 5. If you haven't seen the recent coverage or heard about the pathway, our new MEMS program is gaining traction for being the first of its kind in Ohio.

Through the MEMS pathway, students manually produce tiny integrated devices or systems that combine mechanical and electrical components. These devices are found in many electronics, pharmaceutical products, and medical equipment. Read more below about our plans for the construction of a certified cleanroom (and what a cleanroom is), our partnership with Lorain County Community College, and how we are preparing students for this in-demand career.

Gifted Identification Now Open

Students attending Midview Local School District have the opportunity to be recommended for gifted screening. Students may be identified as gifted in the areas of superior cognitive ability, academic ability, creativity, and/or visual performing arts.

If you feel that your child may meet the criteria as established by the State Department of Education and the Midview Local School District, please complete the following questionnaire no later than Friday, January 9.

Please understand at this time a child may be identified in an area as gifted, but service is not yet mandated or required by the State of Ohio. You may contact your building principal for further information regarding the Midview Board of Education Policy.

Fall/Winter Printed Newsletter

Don't worry - we still believe printed materials are important! To ensure we reach ALL stakeholders in our community, including those who don't necessarily have children in our buildings, a printed newsletter is mailed four times a year through the Rural-Urban.

These newsletters include important updates from our principals and directors the community needs to know to stay in the loop with all things Midview. If you don't receive the Rural-Urban but would like to read our fall/winter edition, please click here.
