Good to Grow: Traditions Old and New
Greetings WHPE members,
December marks the end of the year. I personally love the month of December because it is rooted in traditions and filled with growth opportunities. The inspiration for this month's post came to me as I was searching for the “perfect” holiday tree with my family.
After heading to the tree farm where we cut our tree down last year only to find it closed, we were struck with disappointment. Why does a tree farm need to close for a year to wait for a year of growth? The trees weren't ready to be cut. It made me think if I were to shut down my classes and wait for a year of growth, would it be beneficial or is it a hindrance?
As our traditional family quest of finding the elusive “perfect tree” continued to the second farm we couldn’t seem to find a tree that we all liked. Eventually our third stop yielded a tree we could agree upon. Persistence eventually yields results.
Persistence gives you vital experience. When you're persistent, you learn that each failure gives you another opportunity to learn. With each failure, you'll become more resilient. You'll also learn how you can overcome any challenges. This month I am asking you to help one person to persevere. Teach them it is okay to fail and support them in learning resilience.
Traditions are important; they foster a sense of belonging and community.
Traditions contribute a sense of comfort and belonging for all those who engage in them. They bring people together and provide an avenue for creating lasting memories. Traditions offer an excellent opportunity for meaningful pause and reflection. I believe education should be grounded in meaningful traditions that teach students to see themselves as a part of a specific culture worth preserving.
What are your classroom traditions? Do you have games/activities that you do only once a year? I challenge you to start a tradition if you haven’t or maybe create a new one.
In December, in my health classes we always play snowball fights using questions we should ask in relationships.
My homeroom would be upset if after the first wet heavy snow we didn’t make maple syrup taffy. Find the directions here: https://happyhooligans.ca/make-maple-syrup-snow-candy-3-simple-steps/
Here’s wishing you and yours a safe and wonderful month of December. May your cup be full enough that you have the ability to positively pour into someone or something and make a difference.

WHPE's 125th Anniversary
125th Anniversary – Reflections of the Past 25 Years
To end the year-long celebration and recognition of WHPE’s 125th Anniversary, several Past
Presidents shared their top memory of the past 25 years. Thank you to these folks for serving
as WHPE President in the years indicated and sharing their thoughts…
Memories of my thoughts of WHPE go back to 1991 when Nicole Popowich applied for the
Secretary position. She fit the needs of the organization to a tee, continued to learn and grow
and eventually has become the center of all of its activities. As Executive Director and Past
President of WHPE, the continued growth and success of the organization is directly due to all of you who have served as officers and active members who are sharing your talents. All the best in the future. – A.B. Culver, 1975-1976
My memory from being WHPE President in 2009-2010 is actually a few memories....
1- Changing the name from WAHPERD to WHPE was a very important and significant change.
Bethany, a former student of mine from elementary school designed the new logo, which was
very special to me.
2- Walking around during the convention of my president year and visiting with so many people was so fulfilling and heart-warming, something I will never forget.
3- And my favorite memory.... the connections made, the new friendships, and the feeling of
love and support from so many WHPE peeps! WHPE is such a special organization and I am so grateful to be a part of it, and especially grateful to have gotten the chance to serve as the
President. – Brenda Erdman, 2009-2010
My top professional memory for the past 25 years was the name change to WHPE from
WAHPERD. That was really an important decision that some traditional members opposed
since dance was removed. The new name was much easier for others to relate to. My top
personal memory is being part of the content team that developed the Wisconsin Physical
Education Content Standards booklet and then again for the second edition in 2009, again for
DPI. – Scott Frazier, 2002-2003
This was a tough one but I have to say it was just this last convention. Having Jamie Sparks and I do the Twitter video competing with North Carolina's convention and two other SHAPE America Presidents and seeing the excitement in our room and a completely full room
compared to another state. Also having conversations with Jamie afterwards, he was so
impressed with the number of future professionals. I also talked with multiple vendors I have
known for years who also attend other state conventions. They told me we have one of their
favorite conventions, not always the biggest but they think it is one of their favorites. We have
such strength in our state convention. I have told people all over the country that I believe it is
one of the best conventions in the country. This continues to be confirmed year after year. Such a testament to the past, current, and I believe future leadership in our state. It makes me realize how blessed I have been to be part of this great association. – Brett Fuller. 2014-2016
In 2001, I RETIRED from teaching in MPS. How fun that was!!!! Retirement also meant then
being able to work my consulting business, Aquatic Consulting and Education Resource
Services. To this day, I enjoy the writing and speaking and rely heavily on everything I
learned from my WAHPERD (WHPE) and AAHPERD (SHAPE) experiences. – Sue Grosse,
1987-1988
My dream as the DPI Health and Physical Education consultant was the development and
distribution of new physical education and health standards. These documents were seen as a model by CDC. Many former WHPE Presidents helped develop these documents. My other
dream was to partner with WHPE to have a summer staff development experience and we did
with Best Practices in Health and Physical Education at UW-Stevens Point. – Jon Hisgen,
1986-1987
There were and are three things that come to mind when I look back at my top memories in the past 25 years. Being President in 1998 would be my top memory, but hiring Keith Bakken in 1998 as a full time Executive Director would have had the biggest impact on WHPE during my Presidency. In addition to that, at my suggestion WHPE began giving Longevity Awards.
Personally, I’ve had the opportunity to continue to engage in various WHPE events where I can see many of the friends I worked with in the past 40 years. Being a WHPE leader and President has given me a greater perspective on life, leadership, and working with others. I strongly recommend that when asked to step up and help, please do so. Helping out, leading, and giving are the greatest awards one can receive. – Doug Kane, 1998-1999
My most memorable happenings during my tenure were, first of all, the special people in this
organization that I was privileged to meet and work with. During those times we initiated the
university student leadership workshops which enabled the outstanding students from all the
state universities (and later Midwest) to meet, form professional contacts, and network.
A second outstanding memory was the Lakeside Health and Wellness Conference at a time
when “Wellness“ was just entering the health vocabulary. That, the Legislative Health and
Wellness day at the capital….So many really good things happened during that time
– Sharon O’Leary. 1991-1992
1) President John Kading brought technology to the office and to many presidents
immediately following his 1997-98 term.
2) Stability of WHPE’s Executive Director and Association Manager positions (Keith & Nicole) for over 25 years.
3) High number of Wisconsin PEP Grant recipients whose school staff were WHPE
members.
4) Large number of WHPE members who have received national recognition as TOYs or
had other national awards that have contributed to the high quality of programs, products,
services offered to our WHPE members.
5) Dissolving of JRFH memorandum of agreement with the American Heart Association
and now the need to reestablish Health.Moves.Minds. for financial support – Kris Fritz,
1999-2000

Get Kids Ahead Initiative
As part of the Get Kids Ahead Initiative, three new DPI School Mental Health Consultants have been added to the DPI Student Services/Prevention and Wellness Team. The Get Kids Ahead Initiative provides funding to public and independent charter schools in Wisconsin to help build comprehensive school mental health systems (CSMHS). All districts who opted in to this funding (over 99 percent of districts in the state) received the first allocation of funding in the spring and will be receiving a second allocation this fall.
Take a look at this overview of CSMHS to learn more about key elements of building and sustaining a CSMHS.
