November is National Native American Heritage Month
Native American Heritage Month
What started at the turn of the century as an effort to gain a day of recognition for the significant contributions the first Americans made to the establishment and growth of the U.S., has resulted in a whole month being designated for that purpose.
One of the very proponents of an American Indian Day was Dr. Arthur C. Parker, a Seneca Indian, who was the director of the Museum of Arts and Science in Rochester, N.Y. He persuaded the Boy Scouts of America to set aside a day for the “First Americans” and for three years they adopted such a day. In 1915, the annual Congress of the American Indian Association meeting in Lawrence, Kans., formally approved a plan concerning American Indian Day. It directed its president, Rev. Sherman Coolidge, an Arapahoe, to call upon the country to observe such a day. Coolidge issued a proclamation on Sept. 28, 1915, which declared the second Saturday of each May as an American Indian Day and contained the first formal appeal for recognition of Indians as citizens.
The year before this proclamation was issued, Red Fox James, a Blackfoot Indian, rode horseback from state to state seeking approval for a day to honor Indians. On December 14, 1915, he presented the endorsements of 24 state governments at the White House. There is no record, however, of such a national day being proclaimed.
The first American Indian Day in a state was declared on the second Saturday in May 1916 by the governor of New York. Several states celebrate the fourth Friday in September. In Illinois, for example, legislators enacted such a day in 1919. Presently, several states have designated Columbus Day as Native American Day, but it continues to be a day we observe without any recognition as a national legal holiday.
In 1990 President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 “National American Indian Heritage Month.” Similar proclamations, under variants on the name (including “Native American Heritage Month” and “National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month”) have been issued each year since 1994.

Message from PTA: Holiday Donations
Let’s show our teachers and staff how much we appreciate them! In lieu of teacher gifts, parents and students are encouraged to donate gift cards in $5 to $20 denominations that will be distributed to the entire staff. Donations can be dropped off at the front office. We ask that all donations are submitted by Wednesday, December 16th. Please write the $ amount and the name of the family who donated in a permanent marker on each gift card/sleeve so the teacher/staff member can extend their appreciation once they receive it. We truly appreciate the support of our community! Happy Holidays!

VMS All-Region Orchestra Results
This past Saturday, many of our Vandeventer Orchestra students participated in All-Region Orchestra auditions. This is a highly competitive process in which students prepare advanced music and compete against students from Frisco, McKinney, and Prosper ISD to earn a coveted ranking in a Cross-District Orchestra, or All-Region Orchestra.
Students prepare for this audition through many avenues of practice: weeks of campus-based assessments, mock auditions by playing for both us and their peers, before and after school tutoring, master classes, and additional music instruction with their private lesson teachers.
We are ecstatic to announce that 44 Vandeventer Orchestra students were awarded placements across the three orchestras. This is the largest number of students that have ever placed from the Vandeventer Orchestra! We are thankful to have such talented and dedicated musicians on our campus!
The 44 students’ names are placed on the VMS Orchestra website "All-Region" page to commemorate their success. This can be found by scrolling towards the bottom of the page linked here: https://www.vandeventerorchestra.com/all-region-orchestra

Free Meals
Frisco ISD will provide school meals at no-cost now through December 18th, thanks to a waiver and reimbursement from the federal government. The District has been approved to offer breakfast and lunch at no cost to all students, both on-campus and virtual learners, as well as to children age 18 and younger who are not enrolled in FISD. To receive a free meal, on-campus students must select a complete meal with a fruit or vegetable. No sign up is required.
Parents of virtual learners, as well as non-FISD students, who are interested in picking up free to-go meals should complete the sign-up form for the remainder of the first nine weeks. There will be a separate, additional sign-up form for the second nine weeks (Oct. 19 - Dec. 18) because of the opportunity for students to switch instructional environments. In order for the District to qualify to provide free meals, Frisco ISD had to modify the pick-up locations for families participating in virtual instruction.
Navy National Defense Cadet Corps
An informational webinar regarding the Navy National Defense Cadet Corps (NNDCC) program will be held on Wednesday, November 4th from 6:00-7:00 PM. This webinar is for all parents of students and students who are interested in joining the program for its inaugural year at Lebanon Trail High School in 2021-22. The presentation will include an overview of the program which will address course details, requirements for admission, logistics of transportation, costs to students and families, academic implications, and future benefits for military and college bound students.
Incoming 9th grade students who are admitted into the program will become full time Lebanon Trail High School students for all of the years that they choose to be in the program. For the 21-22 school year, students in 10th-12th grade will have the option to travel to Lebanon Trail for the course during the school day while taking the rest of their courses at their home campus or they may transition to Lebanon Trail High School as full time students. Parents will have an opportunity to ask questions during the webinar via a moderator.
The NNDCC has similar curriculum and student learning experiences as the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC). The mission of the NNDCC is to motivate young people to be better citizens and the program and encompasses a myriad of teaching goals focused on leadership, teamwork, character education, personal responsibility, a sense of accomplishment, and service to the nation.

Miscellaneous Information
Library to Go
FISD librarians believe that reading is the foundation for all learning and contributes greatly to student success in school. Recent research suggests that print remains the preferred medium for reading. As such, we believe that getting books into the hands of FISD students is critical to increase opportunities for independent reading and academic success.
In order to support literacy development, Frisco ISD has created opportunities for students enrolled in the Virtual Academy to checkout print books from their home campus library and pick them up on designated days and times.
Please review this presentation for specific guidelines for Vandeventer Middle School. Reach out to Mrs. Hon for questions at hona@friscoisd.org.
