Play this game to help your child be a focused and careful listener! Ask everyone to close their eyes and listen to the sounds they can hear. Take turns describing to one another the sounds you hear—make sure to listen for things you often don't notice!

Why It's Important

Paying attention to sounds helps your child become a critical listener. This skill will help your child with following directions as well as train your child’s ear to listen to the individual sounds of letters in words.

Not Ready Yet

Allow your child to keep eyes open. See if your child can name the different sounds that are heard. Provide help with labeling sounds like clapping, snapping, whistling, etc. As your child becomes more confident, try closing the eyes while listening for different sounds.

Need a Challenge

With eyes closed, ask your child to point in the direction of each each sound. This is a fun challenge and requires an even greater degree of critical listening.
