October 2023 Volume #2 Issue #2
LATINX FAMILY NIGHT THIS WEDNESDAY 5:30pm-7:30pm DINNER PROVIDED
We Value Your Input
The work to successfully run a school and make informed decisions that are grounded in equity and community require multiple perspectives. We seek input from the community for much of our work:
- how funds are allocated
- school-wide academic and social-emotional goals
- community events
- Type of arts education offered at school
We are seeking community members to be involved in helping us shape our school through the following groups:
- School Site Council [meets 4-5 times per year to review policies and programs and offer input]
- BBPAC: Black and Brown Parent Advisory Council [this caregiver affinity group is focused on vetting potential decisions through a racial equity lens while working to build community for our families of color]
- PTA [volunteers, event organization and support, PTA fund allocation and building community ]
If you are interested in joining:
- School Site Council, please reach out to Michael Diltz
- BBPAC, please reach out to Janessa Willie
- PTA, please reach out to PTA
Run for Sabin
Run for Sabin, our biggest fundraiser of the year, is only four days away, on Thursday, October 5th! We are just over a third of the way to our goal of $25,000 to fund important school programs, including Reading Results, garden education, community events, and much more. If you haven't already registered your student, go to https://mybooster.com/v3 and search "Run for Sabin." The website has helpful tips and templates for fundraising to help us achieve our school-wide goal!
Families and friends are welcome to join us on October 5th to cheer on the kids. Students will be running at different times across the morning:
Kindergarten & 1st Grade: 9:00-9:45 AM
2nd & 3rd Grade: 10:00-10:45 AM
4th & 5th Grade: 11:00-11:45 AM
Cell Phones and Smart Watches
Many students have cell phones and other smart devices. Please remember that young people often do not have the capacity to limit their use. Please limit their use of these devices and follow the many expert recommendations to remove the device from their room during sleep hours. There have been reports of students in online chat groups during late night hours. This makes it difficult for students to focus when they lack sleep and can not detach from their use of technology.
SABIN CELL PHONE AND SMART DEVICE POLICY
We want to honor families’ wishes that their students be able to carry cell phones and smart watches for safety reasons, while we maintain the integrity of the school learning environment. To that end, cell phones and smart watches:
May not be used during school hours.
Must be turned off at all times during school hours, on school buses, and at after school activities (including SUN).
If students do not comply with this policy (e.g., their phone rings or is visible during school hours or students are playing on their smart watch-- including lunch time and recess), the consequences are as follows:
1st time = warning, device taken, kept in office and student can pick up at the end of day;
2nd time = device taken, kept in office, parent/family contacted and phone picked up by parent/family;
3rd time = device taken, parent/guardian are asked to meet with administration and student.

Library
There is no greater joy than seeing the library filled with students and families! It was wonderful to see and meet so many families at Back to School Night.
Things you might not know about the library - we are open in the morning when breakfast is served for check out or a place to read. Forget to bring back your book? Just drop by in the morning!
And. . . if you have not read it, Heartwood Hotel is a new favorite and a great read aloud.
Here is a list of more readalouds for littles (and Bigs!)
And. . . .we are talking about OBOB, a reading and memory cooperative team competition for the 3-5 graders. Students form teams and read (book form or audiobook) from a list of 16 books. In order to be inclusive for students in this process, I am working with students on forming teams. I put a high emphasis on student empowerment in the process, but also watch out for those quiet ones who might not otherwise try it. The best way to start supporting your child if they are interested in joining! Support their reading of the books (reading with them is a great activity!). Watch for registration soon!
Feel free to reach out if you have questions!
