This Week at GLOBE
News & Notes | February 9, 2022
From the Executive Director
Dear GLOBE community,
I hope you are well. Our campuses are colorful this month, with hallways decorated for Black History Month (see images below), students in their heritage colors on Fridays, and starting tomorrow, dress-down Thursdays in support of the upcoming eighth-grade trip. We look forward to a time when everyone can be in the building together to enjoy these moments!
I'm also proud to see our community continuing to do an excellent job minimizing the impact of coronavirus, and I thank you for your vigilance with regard to masking, testing, and quarantine periods. In case you missed it, yesterday I shared an update to our COVID-19 protocols, based on trends in our school's data.
Lastly, I want to update you on last week's water leak: The affected classrooms were professionally cleaned and dried by Hibernia Environmental, and we also ran industrial dehumidifiers over the weekend as an extra precaution. Hibernia gave the all-clear and students and teachers are back in their usual spaces. We're continuing to work on the underlying HVAC issue and will keep you apprised.
As always, if you have any questions, please let us know.
Sincerely,
Christi Elliott-Earby
Executive Director

Dress-down Thursdays are back!
Help our 8th grade students raise money for their trip to Savannah by bringing $1 to dress-down on Thursdays. Dress-down days will take place on both campuses every Thursday, from February 10 to March 31. Parent volunteers will be collecting money at the front door (LC) and the gym door (UC). Please make every effort to bring the exact change. We cannot accept coins. Thank you in advance for your support!

Upper Campus Assistant Head of School Judy Limor will be hosting a meeting for current 3rd grade parents to talk about 4th grade at GLOBE and the transition to Upper Campus on Thursday, February 24, at 5:30pm. Please check the weekly newsletter on Wednesday, February 23 for the Zoom link.
Do you have a current 5th grade student at GLOBE?
Upper Campus Assistant Head of School Judy Limor will be hosting a meeting for current 5th grade parents to talk about 6th grade at GLOBE and the transition to middle school on Thursday, February 24, at 7:00pm. Note: This meeting is intended for current 5th grade families ONLY. Please check the weekly newsletter on Wednesday, February 23 for the Zoom link.
Read Across America Day
Kindergarten to 5th grade students will be celebrating Read Across America Day on March 1 and 2. All students will celebrate on their English day! Students will have the opportunity to choose a book that represents their culture or family history. They can dress up as a person from that book and if possible donate a copy of the book to their classroom library. We hope to add additional books to the classroom libraries so they can be even more robust and reflective of our diverse community. Reading diverse and inclusive books in the coming weeks might help your student discover a character with whom they identify. You might even find one here on Read Across America's calendar for the year. Looking for even more diverse books? Click here.
Last chance to order your yearbook
Yearbook print quantities will be set at the end of this week. If you don’t order, you are not guaranteed to receive a book. Click here to order it today!
Campus notes
IMPORTANT: Both campuses would like to draw your attention to the carpool issues highlighted below. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. Remember CREST.
Lower Campus
Morning carpool
All vehicle traffic utilizing Briarwillow Rd. is reminded not to block the residents’ driveways. DeKalb Police will be monitoring this continuing problem. Please be courteous to our neighbors. Thank you.
Upper Campus
Morning carpool
- The carpool line opens at 7:30am. Unless your student is signed up for ECP, they may not be left on campus until that time. We have a number of parents who are dropping off students, unsupervised, in the dark, prior to the start of carpool. This is a major safety concern, and needs to cease.
- Morning carpool is being significantly delayed by parents who continue to turn left out of the morning carpool line, or who turn right as requested only to immediately block traffic on Briarcliff Road turning left into the park. Since classes resumed after winter break, carpool is ending 5-10 minutes late (after 8:00am), and students are missing important instructional time.
- When exiting the carpool line in the morning, please turn RIGHT onto Briarcliff Road. Out of respect for the cars still in line, the traffic on Briarcliff, and the neighborhood, please refrain from turning around in the park and instead proceed on Briarcliff Road until you have reached a cross street.
8th grade trip information
The second $150 payment for the 8th grade trip to Savannah is due by February 15, 2022. Please login to your account on MyPaymentsPlus to make your payment.
Rising 6th grade Connections selection
All 5th grade students who are returning to GLOBE are required to select their middle school Connections class. A form was recently sent home with students, however, you can also use this online form. The class choices are Art, Band, Orchestra, or Chorus. Forms must be submitted by Friday, February 11. Thank you.
Parent Teacher Community Council (PTCC)
GLOBE Nurse Appreciation Day
Our school nurses have worked so hard during the pandemic! Let’s show them our appreciation on Friday, February 11. Please send in a card for Dr. Reese (LC) or Ms. Robinson (UC). Questions: email classpac.globeacademy@gmail.com.
Lower Campus Lost and Found
Please sign-up to assist with the Lower Campus Lost and Found for the month of February.
Black History Month
We’re looking forward to seeing the students in their Pan African colors and Black heritage wear every Friday of the month. With a focus on wellness, check the PTCC Facebook page all month long to discover wellness tips as well as Black History activities that are happening this month around the metro Atlanta area.
We need you!
PTCC is seeking a co-lead for our communications efforts. This role will give you a chance to liaise between the board of directors and the GLOBE community. If you have two hours a week to spare, good writing skills, and you want to get involved, we invite you to join ComCoor.
2022 GLOBE Annual Auction
We are now accepting donations for the The GLOBE Academy's PTCC Annual Spring Auction. This year's auction will be a two-part event beginning with a silent auction (April 29), open and free for all through mobile bidding, and culminating with an in-person indoor/outdoor event (April 30) at Wild Heaven Brewery in Avondale Estates. The auction benefits all PTCC activities throughout the year including teacher appreciation, classroom resources, cultural events, International Fest, campus updates, Science Night and more. In order to make this possible, we need donations! Know of someone with a wonderful vacation home? Have a favorite boutique or fitness studio in the area? No donation is too big or small.
We also need volunteers to make the auction a success. Email auction@theglobeacademy.net to volunteer to serve on the auction committee.
Admissions
New siblings intending to enroll at GLOBE must enter into the lottery. If you have siblings to apply for the lottery, apply today! Visit theglobeacademy.org/apply.
Virtual tours
The last virtual tour of the season for new, prospective families will take place tonight from 7pm to 8pm on February 9 for Upper Campus. Click here for details.

Proposed new policy for school volunteers and visitors
GLOBE would like to draw your attention to a proposed new policy for school volunteers and visitors that will soon be voted on by DeKalb County School District (DCSD). The proposed new policy appears to have the potential of significantly impacting the ability of parents to volunteer. If you would like to voice your preferences directly to DCSD, you may do so in the comments section on this page.
Extended Care Program (ECP)
We have a limited number of aftercare spaces available. Email cclines@theglobeacademy.net for details.
COVID Corner
Updated quarantine policies
Yesterday, February 8, GLOBE sent out an email detailing the updated quarantine policies. You can view the email here. Our mandatory mask mandate, quarantine and isolation policies, and other prevention guidelines are outlined in the updated COVID-19 Health and Safety Playbook (version 2.a). Please also view our flyer by clicking on the image.
Weekly COVID-19 testing
Viral Solutions will be back on campus again on Thursday, February 10 to provide all GLOBE students and staff with access to free rapid antigen testing. The positivity rates of each testing clinic can be found on tab 2 of the Data Dashboard. Results will be updated the day after each testing clinic occurs.
Viral Solutions has confirmed that weekly testing will occur at GLOBE each Thursday in February. The upcoming COVID-19 testing schedule is as follows: Thursday, February 10th, 17th and 24th. As a reminder, you only have to fill out the testing consent form one time per semester. Once your student is signed up, they will be called for testing each week. If you would like to enroll your student in testing for the semester, you can fill out the consent form here. If you have questions about the testing process or how to receive your student's results, please read the FAQ flyer.
Vaccination Clinic
Our next clinic will be at Upper Campus on February 19.
Vaccination survey
We would like to determine how many of our students are fully vaccinated. This will allow us to determine which students may not have to quarantine if they are exposed to SARS-CoV-2. Additionally, understanding the vaccination coverage in our community will help us to make informed decisions about sporting events and meal time locations. To learn more and/or to notify us, click here.
