1st Grade Busy Bee News

The Purpose of Teasley Elementary School is to educate the whole child in a safe and caring environment.

THANK YOU so MUCH for all of your donations to help our school!!!!

Please encourage your children to wash their hands thoroughly (tops of hands and in between fingers) or utilize hand sanitizer after sneezing or using Kleenex. We have had a few students who have had stomach “bugs” and colds. Washing hands is one of the most efficient and easiest ways to stay healthy!!

• Please send a note in your child's folder ANY time there is a change in transportation. Even if you have told me in person, I need to have a handwritten note to give to the office.

• No changes of transportation can be accepted over email. Changes during the school day must be made in writing to the office and received by 1:30 each day.

• Any kids staying after school for clubs must have a written transportation change for that day. Please send a note EACH DAY that they are staying for ASP enrichment. This cuts down on confusion if there is ever a substitute teacher in the class.

Talk to me about what I’m learning!

Math- I can decompose a number. I can add and subtract numbers to 20. I can determine if an equation is true or false.

Writing­- I can write an informational writing piece.

Language Arts- I can determine the author’s purpose for writing stories. I can identify the main idea. I can retell stories using key details.

Phonics- I can tell you about letters and letter blends.

IB Unit: I can describe how to share the planet. I can state the needs of plants and animals.

As we step into our 3rd IB unit, we would like for you to review the IB learner profiles with your students. Teaching them these skills not only makes them a stronger academic mind, but a better human being.

Review how to be caring with your child. What does it mean? How can you show that you are caring? What about when no one is looking- how does it look and sound?

What is the measure of a healthy ecosystem?
Do you know what an ecosystem is? Examples of ecosystems include coral reefs, deserts, old-growth forests, temperate rainforests, and grasslands. In a balanced and healthy ecosystem, there is a wide range of species present. The measure of the health of an ecosystem is its biological diversity, or biodiversity. There are three levels of biodiversity: genetic diversity, species diversity, and ecosystem diversity.

Humans' Effect on Ecosystems
Within each ecosystem there is a web of connections among the various species of plants, animals, and microorganisms and between the organisms and their environment. The relationships within and between ecosystems form the "web of life". When an ecosystem is healthy, there is a balance between the inhabitants and the resources available to them. The balance between inhabitants and resources ensure their survival. When we, as humans, disturb or remove one part of that balanced ecosystem, it could affect the functioning of other parts of the ecosystem. This leads to the decline of the ecosystem. Eventually, one or more species may become endangered or extinct.

Encourage your child to reflect upon the unit (sharing the planet) and encourage your child to share their opinion of how humans can impact the lives of animals.

Encourage your child to read books at home that correlate to the IB unit we are learning about in school. Encourage them to create new things that can apply to our unit. For example, can your child create something to help plants or animals?

Utilize your time after school to complete some of these activities- your child’s creativity is just as important as their academic goals.

Sharing the Planet- 1st Grade

Central Idea: Living organisms around the world require different necessities in order to survive

Lines of Inquiry:

-Plants and animals have basic needs in order to survive

-Plants have parts with specific jobs

-Humans have an impact on the well-being of plants and animals

Teacher goals for students’ learning:

-Students will make the connection that, like humans, plants and animals have basic needs that must be met.

-Students will begin to understand how our use of plants and animals impact the world around us.

-Students will determine the parts of a plant and how those parts work to help the plant grow and survive.

How can you help at home?

-Encourage your child to describe the parts of a plant. Ask your child if humans eat only one part of the plant. This can be during dinner time!

-Encourage your child to take care of a home plant or start a small garden.

-Ask your child to describe what ‘needs’ animals have and how they differ from the ‘needs’ of plants.

Learner Profile Connection

This unit we will focus on being a reflective, caring, and thinker.

Encourage them at home to be reflective by:

-Discussing how people can impact plant growth or animal habitats

-Encouraging your child to think about what they have learned so far this year—how are these units connected? What have you learned about the world around you?

Encourage them at home to be thinker by:

-Encouraging your child to share how the environment impacts plant and animal growth

-Discussing animals and endangered animals ~ what impact do people have in relation to the endangered animals?

-Encouraging your child to describe how we can care for animals differently

Encourage them at home to be caring by:

-Asking your child what we can do to help endangered animals ~ what do people need to do differently?

-Asking your child what habits we can change to support our Earth (animals and plants)
