Weekly Update March 25 2022
Head Cheetah's Message
Dear Families,
Friday is April 1st, and our students are all enjoying the longer days and more frequent outdoor play. We are so proud of the growth they continue to make as learners. This week, our students not only met their March Read-A-Thon goal, they exceeded it! As a school community, we have read over 3,000 books, and we still have 4 days left in the month! A final tally will be announced soon. Way to go, Cheetahs! Next week, there will be a culminating event to celebrate all of our hard-working readers. Memorial’s students will get to cheer on their principals as they engage in their own friendly challenge! Stay tuned for pictures of this fun event!
Classroom Tidbits:
Preschool- readers worked on the letter T, the sound it makes, and how to make it in sign language.
Kindergarten- readers are beginning their new unit, Avid Readers. Avid readers react to books, think about books, and play pretend.
Grade 1- readers learned about the world by reading non-fiction text. Learners will explore main ideas and details that they can identify.
Grade 2- readers practiced reading information about one topic from two books. They learned how to compare and contrast the books while noticing what information is the same or different.
Grade 3- readers learned how to follow a character up and down a story problem.
With appreciation for your partnership,
Joey & Andrea

Library News
Hi Cheetah families!
March is well under way in the Memorial School Library!
Thank you so much for all of the support that the Spring Scholastic Book Fair received!
(The picture to the right is of a First Grade student using CodeMonkey.)
See below for grade level classroom expectations.
PreK students are enjoying a variety of read alouds and songs with the themes of spring and Saint Patrick’s Day.
Kindergarten is working on practicing their ABC order and learning about call numbers in preparation for 1st grade. So far we have talked about what E stands for (everybody/picture books) and what numbers mean (non-fiction). We have started to learn about coding. Right now students are working through some no tech coding activities but in the coming weeks they will be able to apply what they have learned about algorithms to the BeeBots. We have also read The Donkey Egg, How to Catch a Leprechaun, and Please Open this Book.
First grade is finishing our coding unit using a program called Code Monkey. Students may access Code Monkey at home until the end of the month, should they wish to do so. We are also reading Lulu and the Brontosaurus.
Second grade is reviewing library skills and using the library catalog to be independent library users. They have been enjoying reviewing skills using Kahoot. We are also finishing up reading the Nutmeg nominees so we can vote on our favorite in April.
Third grade is reviewing library skills and using the library catalog to be independent library users. They have been enjoying reviewing skills using Kahoot. We are also finishing up reading the Nutmeg nominees so we can vote on our favorite in April. Before the end of the month all 3rd grade classes will transition into devoting the spring to reading The Wild Robot. This is in preparation for Center School’s Summer Reading, One School, One Book. More information to come.

Nurse News
Dear parents/guardians,
With spring finally here with the warmer weather, it is important to stay hydrated. Please send your child to school with a water bottle labeled with their name.
If your child is experiencing any of the following symptoms, please keep them home for at least 24 hours (without use of pain relieving medication) before returning to school:
fever (temperature of 100.4 or higher)
sore throat
diarrhea
vomiting/nausea
uncontrolled cough
loss of taste or smell
poor appetite/lethargy
pink eye
severe seasonal allergy symptoms
Please be reminded that cough drops are not allowed at Memorial School as they pose a choking hazard. We appreciate your assistance in keeping our students safe. Thank you!
Also, Please bring in a spare change of clothing (shirt, pants and underwear) for your child to keep at school in the case of an accident or a spill. We have a very limited selection of bottoms in the nurse office. If anyone has gently used boys sweatpants or girls leggings size 6 and up and sneakers size 13 and up to donate to the nurse office that would be greatly appreciated.
Please reach out with any questions or concerns!
Thank you,
Nurse Katie and Miss Michelle
