Ivan Green Weekly Update
September 15, 2023
Welcome from Mr. Hiley
The first full week of school was quite an undertaking, and our students rose to the occasion. We had a pretty terrific week at Ivan Green. Students are settling in, and here are some updates on their progress:
- Students are showing independence in the lunch line by putting their numbers into the keypad. We are practicing using a 'loud and proud' voice to tell the kitchen workers our order.
- Teachers have begun formal curriculum. Students are being exposed to their first math units, and books are in their hands a good share of the day.
- Arrival and dismissal routines continue to become more efficient.
- Lots of assessing takes place in the beginning weeks of school. We use all of this information to make groups in classrooms for small-group teaching, and we also use this information to help us make groups of students who will get extra services outside of the classroom (like math or reading intervention). If your child qualifies for these services, you will be notified with a letter sent home and a call from your child's teacher.
With all of those accomplishments, we are excited to see what next week brings! We have a PTA meeting on Monday night, and we would love to see some new faces. Join us in the library at 6:30 to hear about what is happening at Ivan Green!
This year we are debuting a "Coffee with the Principal" series. Each month, I will be hosting a coffee hour after student arrival for parents and caregivers to come into the school and connect with me and a special guest. Our first meeting will be on September 27 at 9:15, and our special guest will be our school social worker Mrs. Zimber. We plan to share some thoughts and answer questions around back-to-school topics, particularly as they relate to home routines that can support positive school behavior. Mrs. Zimber is a pro and will make you feel at ease with any questions related to this topic. We will provide the coffee and conversation - we just need you! Future topics will include some time with our interventionists, special area teachers, and other topics that pertain to building a strong home-school connection. We are open to suggestions, too!
Sincerely,
Lucas Hiley, Ed.D
Principal

A note from Nurse Izzo
As respiratory season is upon us and many kiddos have coughs, runny noses, and congestion, please take their temperatures before sending them to school if they have these symptoms! If you keep your student home due to fever, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, please also remember that your student must be symptom free for a full 24 hours without fever reducing medications before they can return to school. Frequent coughing that doesn't get better with hydration and rest should be evaluated. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to me at 339-1314.
If your student tests positive for COVID, they must isolate for a full five days and then mask for the following 5 days at school (through day 10).
