Be Proactive about Remote Learning Be Proactive about Remote Learning

  • If you need a hot spot, please contact your child's teacher before a remote learning day is called.
  • Make sure your child can sign onto the internet with their school device. Teachers are sending these home for one night at a time so that students can make sure they can learn how to use their device at home.
  • Know where to access your child's schedule for both ASYNCHRONOUS and SYNCHRONOUS learning. Your child's teacher will share this with you.

Don't forget to...

  • Prepare a plan for your family for a "late start" due to weather.
  • Make arrangements for and talk to your child about what to do if there is an early dismissal due to weather. Make sure your child's teacher knows.

Please read this letter from BCS About the cost of repairing devices when they are damaged by neglect or misuse.

Students are responsible for the care of their school-issued devices.

Quickstart Guide for Devices at Home

*Your child's teacher will be sending a hard copy of this home, and the hard copy will have your child's Login information - ID and password.

Asynchronous Learning Days Asynchronous Learning Days

For Asynchronous Learning, students will have assigned tasks they will complete during the day. Your child's teacher will share this with you. Tasks may include work on and off the computer.

Assignments will be posted on Seesaw (2nd Grade) or Google Classroom (3rd & 4th Grades) by 10 am.

Here are links to each grade level's ASYNCHRONOUS Learning Plans:

  • 3rd Grade Asynchronous

Synchronous Learning Days <- Everything you need to know Synchronous Learning Days <- Everything you need to know

Students will have a specific schedule where they will use Google Meet to have virtual meeting with their class. We will have one hour for Reading/ELA and one hour for Math, with some support times scheduled in between. Every link you need should be in this section.

You can find each teacher's Google Meet Link here.

More Information:

On a synchronous learning day, the "School Day" will start at 10:00 am.

  • 10:00 - 11:00 - Reading (all students)
  • 1:00 - 2:00 - Math (all students)
  • Support staff like EC, Title 1 Reading Groups, AIG, and English Language Learners have additional times. See schedule!
  • Schoolwide Schedule for each grade level and support teacher <-- this shows when each teacher's meeting is held!

*Your child's teacher will share specific schedules with you, so check your email! Teachers might have to take the day off due to weather, and if they do, they will let you know if your child will join another class for synchronous learning.

Parents - do NOT stress if you can't make these work. Students only have to complete the work assigned (within 5 school days) to get marked "present" for the day. Attending the virtual meeting is not required to be marked present.

Information from Buncombe County Schools Information from Buncombe County Schools

What happens when we must close our buildings to students due to inclement weather?

--If a weather event is truly severe and impacts power or the internet in our area, the day would be a ‘no school’ day where no instruction would occur.

--For significant but less severe weather events, we are able to utilize a certain number of remote learning days that will count toward our state-mandated instruction per year. This means we will not have to make up those days later in the school year.

Remote learning (beginning at 10 a.m.) would be asynchronous on the first day of the weather event and synchronous on all subsequent days of that weather event. Any work assigned must be made up within five days.*

*Asynchronous means that the teacher will assign tasks that will be completed online, but there will be no live teaching.

*Synchronous means that there will be a blend of live virtual instruction and independent work.

--Should an isolated area of the county be severely impacted by a storm or your family has extenuating circumstances, please work with your school and teacher to make up the work.

--If we expect a weather event, we’ll ask all students to take their school-issued device home with them.

What happens during a delayed start?

Should a minor weather event cause us to delay starting school for students, you will receive more specific instructions that day to let you know when to drop your child off or have them at the bus stop.

What happens during an early dismissal?

Should we have to send students home early due to a weather event, students will eat lunch before they leave. The district will let families know when they can begin picking up students or expect them on the bus. We’ll also include information for after-school activities and athletics. If a parent is delayed in picking up their child from school, the child will be safe and supervised until the parent arrives.
