Gardner Bullis Students and Teachers: Building Community
Among the strengths of Gardner Bullis is the school's strong community of students and educators. One of the ways the school builds community is by providing upper-grade students opportunities to mentor younger children, to take on more responsibilities and to serve as role models.
Enthusiastic sixth grade students shared their experiences assisting families with curbside drop off, serving as playground monitors at recess, teaching kindergartners games on the playground and helping younger students with arts and crafts in the school's Zen Den.
Gardner Bullis teachers are building a strong educational community as well, through a series of classroom “walk throughs” focused on keys to student success, such as student engagement and math instruction. By observing their peers in the classroom, sharing best practices and focusing on student outcomes, Gardner Bullis teachers are learning from one another to ensure strong student achievement in the school.
Trustee Vaishali Sirkay said to the Gardner Bullis teaching team, "I'm impressed that you're truly modeling what it means to be lifelong learners for your students by showing them how you learn from one another." Great work Gardner Bullis!

Facilities Master Planning and New School Site Update
Mr. Kenyon, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services, presented key issues the Board will discuss over the next six months related to school facilities: a long term site for Bullis Charter School, how to use the new school site, whether or not to transition to a 6-8th grade middle school model, and updating the district's long term Facilities Master Plan.
With the goal of continuing strong student success in our schools for decades to come, the Board's decisions on these key issues will formulate the district's long term Facilities Master Plan.
At the next meeting of the Board of Trustees on January 27, the Board will begin to review reports from all of the study sessions and committees that have studied the educational benefits of transitioning to a 6-8th grade middle school model in recent years. The Board will continue to update the community on subsequent conversations about this and all of the interconnected facilities issues.
For the full presentation, review item I.2. on our online agenda.
Community Engagement Update
After months of community engagement where the public has had an opportunity to ask questions, suggest ideas and weigh support for long term facilities options to house Bullis Charter School, the Board will receive a report from its independent community engagement facilitator, MIG, on January 27.
After reviewing the MIG report, the Board will discuss how to narrow down which options should be analyzed in more detail. The resulting information will then be presented and discussed in a series of public meetings in the coming months. The community will have ample opportunity to provide public input as the Board conducts its analysis and determines a proposed facilities solution to house BCS.
The Board invites and encourages your participation in these discussions as we seek a long term solution that will continue the academic excellence our community expects from our schools.
For the full presentation, visit our online agenda and review item I.3.
