Message from the Superintendent: October 9, 2023
Dear PYLUSD Community,
As Superintendent, it is my job to focus on preventing tragedies before they occur. The success of proactive measures often goes unnoticed because you are essentially putting out a fire before it starts. For example, one of the key proactive measures we have taken this year to keep our students safe is to add an Anaheim Police Department School Resource Officer (SRO) at Esperanza High School, which was our only comprehensive high school without one. The impact of the SRO is a proactive measure to help avoid future catastrophic events which we hope will never occur at our schools.
Over the course of the last few years, I have been shaken by tragedy after tragedy resulting from fentanyl drug overdoses. We have seen several reports of students falling victim to this drug while on campuses, in their homes, and everywhere in between. Therefore, it is time for PYL to take immediate proactive measures to make sure our kids do not fall victim to this dangerous drug that has infested our communities.
To that end, I have engaged Chief Brad Butts of the Placentia Police Department and Captain Joses Walehwa of the Orange County Sheriff's Department, Yorba Linda Police Services, to create a fentanyl awareness campaign in which every student at our high schools will be educated on the dangers of this horrible drug. Further, we are working with our city partners to expand the availability of NARCAN® on all of our campuses in case of emergency. You will learn more about this proactive campaign that is all about Putting Kids First below.
Respectfully,
Dr. Alex Cherniss

Putting Kids First
Fentanyl Awareness Efforts in PYLUSD
In October, all PYLUSD schools will participate in the National Red Ribbon Week campaign to help raise awareness of the dangers of drug use. The goal is to help educate our students and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. Through a partnership with our local law enforcement, we are planning student assemblies at all high schools on the dangers of fentanyl. A similar presentation will be offered to parents and families through the district’s Parent University program later this year. Trained officers from the Placentia Police Department and the Orange County Sheriff's Department will provide the presentations. Our hope is that creating awareness and providing education to families and students will have a positive impact on student decision-making and help save lives.
As we shared earlier this year, we have added doses of NARCAN® to all school sites to be better prepared to respond to any student or staff member in need. NARCAN® reverses an opioid overdose by blocking the effects of the opiates on the brain and by restoring breathing. Over 250 PYLUSD staff members have been trained in the administration of NARCAN®. We are currently working on a plan to increase the number of trained staff and the supply of this life-saving drug on school campuses.
