Board Brief

As part of our district's commitment to open and transparent communication, we share this summary of Monday's school board planning work session.

The school board amended the night's planning agenda in order to go ahead and approve Tate Hill Jacobs Architects as the design consultant for the Henry Clay High School building project, which moves the process along a little more quickly. The action followed substantial discussion about the needs at Henry Clay. "We've set an expectation to provide first-class educational facilities, and this is the right first step," said Chief Operating Officer Myron Thompson.

Confirmed Name for the New Middle School:

Board members unanimously approved the naming committee's choice for the school under construction on Polo Club Boulevard: Mary E. Britton Middle School. Britton was a public school teacher, journalist, and civil rights activist. She was also the first Black female doctor in Kentucky and practiced medicine in Lexington. "Many members of the community have said they are newly learning about Dr. Britton," said board Chair Tyler Murphy. "This is an exciting opportunity to highlight and elevate a Lexingtonian who had significant impact." The middle school is slated for completion in June 2025.

During the superintendent's report, world language instructional specialist Laura Roche Youngworth shared how our May graduates fared in demonstrating a high level of proficiency in English and one or more world languages. In other words, can the students read, write, speak, and listen at a functional level -- even if the "other" is their home language. "Each year they just get better and better," Roche said of the Seal of Biliteracy numbers. In the Class of 2023, our district had 242 seal recipients. Altogether, 940 graduates have earned the seal in 37 languages since FCPS adopted this recognition in 2017.

The Fayette County Board of Education routinely meets twice a month, generally on the second and fourth Monday. The planning work session is an opportunity to receive extended presentations, review the agenda for the upcoming action meeting, and provide time for board members to ask questions and hold discussions with staff. The action meeting is when the board votes on proposals.
