MESSAGE FROM OUR SUPERINTENDENT
The unpredictable weather this time of year often raises questions about how the district determines whether or not to have a delayed start or snow day following late season storms.
Our first priority is the safety of students and staff. Our buses and drivers are well-equipped for winter weather. To determine whether we can transport students safely, we rely on the expertise of a team of people at the National Weather Service and throughout the district.
When hazardous weather is headed our way, the district team connects via phone and text around 3:30 a.m. to monitor the latest road conditions and forecast. It is critical for the team to make a decision by 5:15 a.m. so we can get the message out to employees and families by 5:30 a.m. This is when our buses and early morning staff begin their day. Our team members, who are located throughout the district, include the transportation supervisor, superintendent, operations director, custodial supervisor, and an administrator in Gilchrist.
Our district is large geographically and some of our families live at higher elevations or in more rural areas. Conditions can vary throughout the district, which reaches from Rocky Point and Keno to the west, Malin to the south, Bonanza and Beatty to the east, and Gilchrist to the north. That is why at times we decide to remain open as a district, but cancel classes at specific schools due to inclement weather.
We understand that families may determine they cannot safely transport their child to school because of environmental factors in their area. If this is the case, parents are asked to call and inform their school so the absence can be excused. Information about inclement weather notifications is available on our district webpage under the inclement weather icon: https://www.kcsd.k12.or.us/families/inclement-weather-information.cfm.
I just wanted to ensure our families understand how these decisions are made and to thank our inclement weather team, bus drivers, and others who get up early to help make decisions, transport our students, and shovel and plow our school campuses.
As always, we appreciate your support and partnership in educating our students.
Sincerely,
Glen Szymoniak
STATE WRESTLING CHAMPS!
Henley's Dylan Clark and Matthew McCoy take championship titles
SCIENCE OF COOKING: Bonanza expands culinary program
Classroom renovation includes new sinks, ovens, countertops, microwaves
Fystin Qualls carefully sliced into the steak he and his classmates had prepared for their final exam. They marinated the meat in garlic, soy and Worcestershire sauce before pan-searing it, aiming for a medium rare finish. The high school junior teamed up with seniors Kylie Basso and Gabby Keyes to make a meal out of five ingredients as part of the semester final in their food industry and science class at Bonanza Junior/Senior High School. Students had two days to plan and prepare a meal that included steak, cilantro, oranges, cauliflower, and buttermilk. The meals were then given to school staff members to enjoy and judge. Read more

FROM THE FARM TO THE LUNCH TRAY
Students throughout the Klamath County School District enjoyed locally grown potatoes for lunch Feb. 16 thanks to Circle C Marketing of Malin. In all, school cafeterias served 2,860 pounds of russet potatoes provided through the district’s Farm to School program.
Each month, our cafeterias feature a hyperlocal or Oregon-grown food as a way to support our local communities and increase the amount of fresh foods on student breakfast and lunch trays.
The potatoes were baked and served with a variety of topping options. A shout out to Circle C for being a nutritious and yummy part of our Farm to School program!
HANDS-ON LEARNING AT THE FARM EXPO
Baby goats, pigs, chickens, cows, horses, potatoes, and more!
Nearly 900 fourth-graders filled the event center at the Klamath County Fairgrounds for the Annual Farm Expo Feb. 22 and Feb. 23 for an up-close look at agriculture and products made in the Klamath Basin. Fourth-graders from all KCSD elementary schools attended as well as students from private and city district schools.
Volunteers from agriculture, OSU Klamath Basin Extension, 4-H clubs, and Lost River, Henley, Mazama, and Bonanza FFA clubs provided hands-on learning at 16 stations. Students had a chance to pet a baby goat, see cows and horses, and touch a pig.
A shout out and thank you to the sponsors of the 2023 Farm Expo --Klamath County Fairgrounds, Klamath-Lake County Farm Bureau, Klamath County CattleWomen, Bob’s Excavating, Whiskey Creek Ranch, Klamath County Hay Growers, Pacific Crest Federal Credit Union, Ag West Farm Credit, Basin Fertilizer, Flowers Farms, Cheyne Brothers, Basin Tire Service, J.W. A SHOUT OUT TO ROBOTICS
Robotics teams do well at Icebreaker; state is at Mazama High on March 10-11
Fifty-six teams from 10 schools competed for state qualifying status as well as tournament trophies Feb. 10 and Feb. 11 during the fifth annual Klamath Icebreaker VEX Robotics Competition at Mazama High School.
Beginning robotics teams competed in a new rookie division Feb. 10 with middle school and high school divisions taking the field Feb. 11. Schools competing were Mazama, Chiloquin, Lost River, Henley High, Bend High, Cascade Academy, Hood River High, Henley Middle, Lost River Junior High, and Brixner Junior High.
“We were excited to have teams from elsewhere – Bend, Eugene, and Hood River – who don’t often travel to Klamath Falls,” said Laura Nickerson, tournament organizer. “The competition is tough.”
The state VEX Robotics Tournament will be hosted at Mazama High School on March 10 and 11. Read more

COIN DRIVE HELPS ANIMAL SHELTER
Project led by Shasta fourth-graders collects $1,363
A coin drive organized by fourth-graders in Dena Morosin’s class at Shasta Elementary School raised $1,363 for the Klamath Animal Shelter. Students and staff at the school donated the money over a two-week period.
The coin drive to help the shelter was a community service project as part of the Classroom Champions program. As part of the program, Morosin’s fourth-graders are being mentored by U.S. Olympic Nordic skier Rosie Brennan, a two-time Olympian, four-time U.S. champion and back-to-back World Cup holder.
Brennan works with the class throughout the school year, providing video lessons once a month on life skills such as goal setting, community service, leadership, emotions, community, perseverance, healthy eating, diversity, and feedback.
