School Closed Monday Dec 11, 2023
December 10th, 2023
Update 12/10/23 at 8:10pm
Preliminary discussions with emergency management indicates we will will not need to be closed for an extended length of time and will potentially be able to open on Tuesday.
When we do open, please be aware that the highway will have some lane closures throughout the week as crews work to repair the fuel vault and clean up the fuel. Expect delays and congestion around the Conway Hill Rd. area and geting into and out of the school parking lot.
We will send out a message as early as we can on Monday with a timeline and details on our reopening.
Below is a news release from Skagit County Emergency Management with more details about the leak.
Pipeline Leak on Hwy 534 - Conway School Closed
Good Morning Conway Families,
I have made the decision to close school tomorrow, Monday, December 11 because of a pipeline leak next to our school, to ensure our students, staff and families are safe. I am sending this early notice to allow families time to make alternative arrangements for their students.
The BP Olympic Pipeline runs under the Conway Hill neighborhood and crosses under 534 where it intersects with Conway Hill Rd. This morning there was a leak discovered on the north side of Hwy 534 with an unknown amount of fuel that has leaked into the surrounding area. At this point the area is closed off while they assess the damage and their next steps.
The Skagit County Emergency Operations Center has set up a temporary command center at the elementary school so they can coordinate with the different agencies (fire dept, EPA, etc.) and the pipeline company that is on site working on the issue.
We are coordinating with the Emergency Management Team as they work to understand the scope of the situation and the next steps. We will notify families as early as we can on Monday about the status of school for Tuesday.
