Kindness Vocabulary Word of the Week

Each week, our DWS Kids are introduced to a vocabulary word of the week related to kindness and building social-emotional capacity. The words are introduced during the daily morning announcement and throughout the week the DWS staff challenges students to use these words in activities and conversations, whether it be during a classroom discussion, writing assignment, or speaking with a friend. We ask that families partner with us to continue the work of inspiring and challenging our DWS Kids to continue using these words!

This week our vocabulary word was GRATITUDE.

Every year, after reading “Turkey Trouble” students in third grade disguise their “turkeys”. The students then write persuasive essays to convince readers not to eat them for Thanksgiving. This project is always lots of fun and the students get so creative!

News from the Nurse

We have had a great start to the school year!

Just a reminder -

Please remember to send your students to school with a reusable water bottle and filling snack daily!

  • All students have a snack break during the day. Please pack a healthy snack EVERY DAY! Great snacks include easy to eat fruits and veggies like apples, oranges, carrots and cucumbers as well as whole grain snacks including granola bars, crackers. Cheese sticks and yogurts are another great option. These ideas help keep hungry bellies at bay and students ready to learn!

  • Have your child bring a water bottle (or two) from home EVERY DAY. Students are able to use the bottle filling stations throughout the day to refill bottles as needed.

General Information

  • Mandated Health Screening Information:

    • The following state-mandated screenings of students will be completed this year by the school nurse.

      • Grades PK thru 5: Vision Screening (October - December)

      • Grade PK thru 3: Hearing Screening (October - December)

      • Postural screening for grade 5 in October - a letter will be sent home with more information.

      • Grades 1, 4: Heights and weights with BMI calculations per DPH regulations (October -December)

    • A parent/guardian may opt out of these mandated screenings only through written notification to the school nurse by October 8th.

    • These are only screenings and NOT a diagnostic service. Failures or concerns regarding the results will warrant further assessment by the child's physician. Specific recommendations will be sent home in writing/phone call for vision, hearing and postural screening.

    • Don’t hesitate to reach out at anytime - 781-834-5045, ext 42500 or via email - kAcampbell@mpsd.org

  • All GRADE 4 students must send in a physical exam dated within the past year. Thank you to those who have already sent in their forms.

  • Please log in to your child’s Aspen account and update the medication consent portion, this is something that needs to be done yearly. *This cannot be done on your handheld device/cell phone*

  • All medical documentation can be faxed to 781-834-5072 to the attention of the School Nurse.

  • Do not hesitate to call with any school health-related questions or concerns at 781-834-5045. I can also be reached by email at: kAcampbeLL@mpsd.org.

DWS Security Updates

A double door entry system with a security window was added to the DWS.

As a security measure, we will not be letting visitors into the building unless you are volunteering. Visitors who have a scheduled meeting will wait in the vestibule and be escorted by the host to the meeting.

All visitors must present a valid ID - no exceptions! We understand that we know many parents/guardians, but we will be requiring ALL visitors to present their ID when they volunteer and/or pick up a student - EVERY TIME. This will be frustrating at first, but we are working hard to maintain the safety of our students.

Arrival & Dismissal Protocols
