STAFF SPOTLIGHT--MR. MACHA (ENGLISH 11 and 12)
I grew up in a small town in the Thumb of Michigan. I graduated from Marlette Jr/Sr High School. I have a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature from Central Michigan University, and I have a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor. At WHS, I teach English 11 & 12 and am proud of our students’ kindness & willingness to learn. My free time is divided between reading, painting, and swimming, and I try to travel as frequently as I can. I’m new to Southwest Michigan and have very much enjoyed learning the quirks of the area.

WHAT'S UP IN MATH CLASSES THIS WEEK?
Algebra 2 students have been focusing this week on learning how to graph Quadratic Equations. Quadratic Equations make a graph called a parabola; it can look like a "U" shaped graph either opening up or down. To graph them students need to find the vertex using algebra techniques in class. We also used the graphing calculator to help check our work.
PreCalc
PreCalc students took a Quiz earlier this week and today started working on Composing Functions. This is when you take one function and place it into another to create an entirely new function. Today we started an Activity to practice composing functions where students physically cut & paste functions into each other.
Personal Finance students are starting off the year learning the ins and outs of managing their money and savings. They are also embarking on the world of spreadsheets, using their newfound skills to create budgets and various spreadsheets to enhance their life beyond high school.
Geometry
We have completed the first standard, transformations, and are currently working on the second standard using this knowledge, congruent triangles. Students have enjoyed exploring triangle properties using spaghetti noodles.

They are also such bright lights and make school so much more enjoyable! My favorite subjects are band and choir I really enjoy music and enjoy learning more every opportunity I get. I play soccer and have been a part of the school musicals we have had. I am also in the marching band in the color guard. In my free time I spend time working with my horse Ditto whether it is riding or brushing, this one or my favorite things to do during my free time along with practicing for color guard and learning new things. Tuesday, October 3, Migrant and English Learner students visited Western Michigan University. They toured the campus and ate lunch at Valley Dining Center. WMU BRONCO BAND DAY!
Four marching band students participated in WMU Bronco band day with 64 other area high schools. The band was made up of almost 500 members. Students who attended had a few weeks to memorize music and color guard routines prior to Saturday. The kids were paired with one WMU band student to learn what preparing for half-time show is like and ask questions about college. The kids then participated in half-time performance and post game performance. The kids were exhausted after about a 14 hour day, but had a great time. It was great learning experience. Members who attended were: Lucy Logsdon, Lauren Lovell, Zack Gruszczyk, and Ben Ruland. Next up is the friends/family performance this coming Saturday at 2.

Every Wesco location will donate one cent from each fountain drink sold to local public high schools during October, November, and December. Pepsi has committed to donating up to $20,000 of fountain cup proceeds. Each Public High School will receive a minimum of $100. The rest of the $20,000 pledge will be distributed according to sales.
