Stephen Moss, feature writer at The Guardian and author of The Rookie: An Odyssey through Chess (and Life), will present the prizes.

My First Chess Tournament If you are graded ECF Under 85 or ungraded and playing in a tournament for the first time, then you may play in this section. PARENTS - DID YOU KNOW that your U18 child might be eligible for a FREE English Chess Federation membership from 4 July 2017 (lasts until September 2018)? Check with the ECF for full details on 01424 775222 as it will save you ££ on entry fees - including Kings Place!
Grandmasters and International Masters - free entry for the first 20 registered into the Open and no membership requirement for non-ENG GMs and IMs.

Format: six rounds, swiss system (not a knockout)
Time control: all moves in 25 minutes each plus 5 seconds added for each move made (Fischer timings)
Entry fee: various depending, no entries on the day
ECF Membership: ideally minimum Silver in order to qualify for a discount on the entry fee
ALL sections are FIDE rated and graded by the English Chess Federation.
The event is in five sections, Open (for the strongest players), Major Under 170, Minor Under 145 and Amateur Under 120. These are based on ECF grades. Under 85 My First Chess Tournament If you have never had a grade or you are Under 85, then you may play in this section.
If you have never played in a tournament before and you have never had a rating the new My First Tournament section is the appropriate section for you!
