Principal's Message
Good afternoon Canby High School Students and Families!
One of my favorite things to do is visit classrooms. I am amazed at the variety of activities that our students do on a regular basis from core academics to career and technical education to the arts and so much more. It has been awesome to witness our students build skill. This past week we had an iron chef competition, graphic design restaurant project presentations, Cantalinas singing at the Grotto, and so many more culminating projects and exams as the first trimester comes to a close. Also, this week our College and Career Center sponsored a Military Panel where students who were interested got to hear from current and retired veterans. Our goal is that all students graduate from CHS prepared for their next steps, and we strive to provide opportunities for all to explore their interests.
Tomorrow, Friday, 12/2, is a grading day. The new trimester starts Monday; schedules are available in Parent/Student Vue. The last day for schedule changes is Wednesday, 12/7. Students should contact their counselors to request a schedule change. First trimester grades will be available in Parent/Studentvue on Tuesday. Also next week, we will have a “Secure” Drill on Wednesday. This drill involves locking all outside doors, but business as usual continues inside of the building.
As we begin the new trimester, winter sports are ramping up as well. Contests began this week. Friday, both Women’s and Men’s Basketball play at home, followed by an after game dance sponsored by Key Club. Swimming had an excellent meet vs Milwaukie. We won; Women’s 133-18 and Mens 120 -16. The dance team had their first competition of the year on 11/19 at Reynolds High School. They competed in the Modern, Contemporary, and Jazz category (this is a new one for us!) They had 3 amazing performances - and earned 1st place in Modern, 1st in Contemporary, and 2nd in Jazz! Marissa VanHoose and Ava Coleman placed in the top 10 advanced drill down. The team competes again this Saturday at Nelson High School.
I continue to be encouraged by students’ level of engagement in classrooms, and the care that they show for one another. Thank you for your continued partnership as we strive to keep students connected and challenged while supporting them so that they can succeed and meet their goals.
Best,
Cari Sloan

Important Information
If your student will be missing extended school due to travel, please make arrangements for them by contacting our Attendance Secretary Jessie Munoz at (503)263-7210. Jessie will help you ensure all of the proper paperwork is complete. We will then set students up for support with our teacher Tonya Boustead. Tonya can help students and teachers create a plan to stay up to date with school work while they are gone.
Inclement Weather
As the temperatures get colder, it’s time to start preparing for winter weather! If the weather is severe enough to cancel school, the first day of inclement weather will be a snow day for all! Any inclement weather day thereafter will be an online learning day. Elementary school families, this means you may see iPads come home with your students if questionable weather is forecasted.
In the event of an online learning day, Canby High School will begin at 8:40 a.m. and all other schools will begin at 9:30 a.m. Students should watch for Zoom links from their teachers. If students have trouble connecting or need help, they should reach out to their teacher. Canby School District strives to make the most of this valuable educational time, but please know that students will not be penalized if they are unable to connect.
To make sure you’re set to receive information about school delays, or closures, and online learning days, please subscribe to Canby School District on FlashAlert. Now is also a good time to update your text preferences online by listing your phone number.
For more information, please see our inclement weather page.

Wrestling Hall of Fame
This summer, our wrestling program and alumni got together for the CHS Wrestling Hall of Fame Induction. This event recognized 131 individual state placers and 21 state trophy teams from 1948-2022. The event was held on August 6th in the FAC and was attended by around 400 people, traveling from all over the US to return to Canby. As we begin the winter sports season, we want to thank the Wrestling Hall of Fame Committee for making this possible: Norm Berney, Bill Scott, Larry Owings, Bob Bergen, Doug Sprague, Jack Bigej, Doug Kivett, Ken Buckles, Punk Hostetler and a special thank you to Jim Gadberry for all his work leading and organizing this event. Along with acknowledging our past alumni, a scholarship fund was created for future wrestlers and the alumni collectively raised over $17,000. This Hall of Fame and scholarship is a great way to honor our past and look toward our future wrestlers at Canby! Thank you Canby Wrestling Community!
Attendance at CHS
To ensure the accuracy and efficiency of our attendance process, please remember the following guidelines:
If your student needs to leave class for an appointment or because they are sick, inform the attendance office 30 MINUTES PRIOR to leave time. This will help us ensure that your student receives a note to leave class in a timely manner. Students will not be excused without a note.
Pre-Excused Absence: For any anticipated absence that will be more than three days, students are expected to pick up a Pre-Excused Absence Form from Jessie Munoz at the Attendance Office.
To report an absence, call Jessie Munoz at our attendance line at 503-263-7210 or email chs-attendance@canby.k12.or.us.
Students have 48 hours to have unexcused absences excused. Students may lose the opportunity to make up work for credit due to unexcused absences. Please report an absence as soon as possible.
Remember that attendance matters and students who attend class regularly are more likely to stay on track, graduate on time, learn deeply, and get the most from their high school experience.
