The Mustang Minute
Week of February 28th
FROM THE PRINCIPALS' OFFICES
We have had quite the weather this week. The snow, rain, sleet and hail have certainly kept us on our toes. Winter is beautiful, but we cannot wait for spring to be here!
This coming week will be a busy one at both Brookwood schools. We have the book fair hosted in the middle school library, and parent/teacher conferences in both buildings on Thursday. As a reminder, there will be no school on Friday, March 4th!
Thank you for your ongoing partnership and support. We will look forward to seeing those of you who have appointments at conferences next week. Until then...have a great weekend, Mustangs!!!

Important Graduation Information for 8th Grade Families:
Team 8 sent home a packet of important graduation information with students on Monday, February 28th. If you have not seen this packet, please ask your student for it. The packet includes information about the requirements for graduation, ordering a cap and gown, and how your student’s name should be printed on their diploma and announced at graduation. This information is essential as we begin planning for our graduation ceremony. It will be here before we know it!
Please return every sheet in the packet - blue, pink, and green - to Ms. Metcalf. Packets are due no later than Friday, March 25th. If you need another packet, please email Ms. Metcalf at jessica.metcalf@gcj2.k12.wi.us.
Thanks!

From the Classroom...
What's Happening in Ms. Zitzler's Class?
February is Dental Health month and 4K launched our Dental Health unit by sending students home with a tooth brushing chart and a brand new toothbrush! Students that complete the chart by brushing morning and night will earn a certificate and a prize!
A major focus of this unit is our discussion of those foods that are "good" and "bad" for our teeth and the importance of drinking water to wash away the cavity creeps when we can’t brush, especially after eating sugary foods. We are learning all about visiting the dentist and what important things he does to keep our teeth healthy. We used our KWL chart to track our learning as we explored this unit. Our art project involved making a two part good teeth/bad teeth chart and searching through magazines and categorizing, then pasting foods that make our teeth “Happy” or “Sad”. We practiced ordering numbered teeth from 1-20 with partners and engaged in counting "teeth" activities from 1-20 using a diagram and marshmallows to practice counting objects accurately, focusing closely on “teen” numbers. It was a fun week of learning about developing good oral hygiene habits!
Hats off to reading for Read Across America!
What's Happening in our BMS Music Classes?
For those not in the "know," WSMA Festivals have five primary goals:
- Improve students’ music performance;
- Increase students’ understanding of music literature and music concepts;
- Motivate students to continue their study of music;
- Establish standards of excellence in music performance;
- Provide opportunities for students to understand the relationship of music experiences to other life experiences.
Students and their teachers choose a musical selection from the WSMA Festival Music List to study, ranging from entry level to advanced.
At the competition, the student introduces themself and their selection, then performs. The adjudicator will provide a written and verbal critique of the performance and award a rating based on defined criteria. (Rating 1 = highest, rating 5 = lowest)
Good luck to the following BMS students who will be competing on March 5th: Talulah Nast, Analia Flores, Myles Derickson, Peyton Kolnik, and Ryder Derickson!

From the Athletic Director's Desk
I wanted to take a moment to thank every one of our Mustang families who participated in Saturday Morning Basketball! It was such a wonderful month of growth and fun - especially working with our Mini Mustangs who I don’t have the opportunity to see often. Thank you for supporting our program and our 8th grade leaders. We were all sad to see it end!
The volleyball teams will be playing their next match on Wednesday, March 9th, at Brookwood. This will be our last game before playoffs start, so come on out to support your Mustangs!

Self-management
Self-Management is a solid skill that children need to succeed. Self-management allows your child to develop their ability to control their behavior and mood, which can be empowering.
The characteristics of self management, which will be displayed in different ways depending on their age and experiences, include:
- Manage and control emotions, thoughts, and behavior in different situations
- Understand why they feel the way they do
- Use appropriate strategies for impulse control and regulating emotions
- Motivating themselves to persevere in overcoming challenges
- Understand that failure or mistakes are a chance to learn and improve
- Set goals, both personal and academic, and work towards them
- Assess where they are at and create new targets
- Develop organizational skills and stick to routines
There are many great reasons for working on self-management skills and strategies.
- Improved confidence & motivation
- Increased self-efficacy when setting and achieving goals
- Improved academic performance
- Improved study skills
- Having pride and confidence in achievements
- Improved self-esteem and self-worth
- Understanding that meeting goals and challenges is not always easy
Want to have a conversation with your child about self-management and self-control?
Use one of these books to read with your child:
When Sophie Gets Angry - Really, Really, Angry
Conversation starters:
- What makes it difficult for you (or others) to self-manage?
- Why do you think [character] struggled to control their emotions?
- What could [character] do to manage their emotions/behavior?
- Do you think it was appropriate for [character] to get angry? What would have been a better strategy?
- Why do you think [character] got so angry/jealous/upset?
- What would be a good strategy to help [character] deal with their emotions?
- What could [character] learn from their mistakes?
