Principal's Message
Good afternoon Canby High School Students & Families,
Thank you for your partnership with the forecasting process. Our forecasting activities were a success, and it will set us up for a great next school year. If students haven’t completed the forecasting process, they should see their counselor.
CHS students continue to amaze me every day with their talents, skills, and hearts. Our cheer team took home 4th place at the state competition. Our women’s wrestlers performed well at districts, with Madi Kidwell taking first and Emilia Ensrud taking second. Both will represent CHS at State. Our swimmers dominated the NWOC league competition with Kali Mull, Quincy Taliafaro, Amanda Yancey, Karina Sawatsky, Kathryn Taggart, Micah Nichols, Amy Smith, Mikayla Knowles, Isaac Beck, Kai Laitinen, Ethan Beck, Alyk House, George VanDenBosch, and Andrew Hayhurst all qualifying for the state meet.
Our clubs showcase our students as well. For example, Eco Club and Key Club recently joined the Kiwanis and other community members at the first annual planting at the Native Plant Sanctuary. Our FFA chapter recently took home awards in a variety of categories. More info about our athletes and clubs can be found below.
In addition to extra and co-curricular activities, it is one of the best parts of my job to visit classrooms. Students are learning about so many different topics and showing their skills in presentations, projects, papers, and more. It is my honor to serve the CHS community.
Have a Wonderful Week!
Best,
Cari Sloan

Attendance and Sick Students:
To ensure the accuracy and efficiency of our attendance process, please remember the following guidelines:
If your student needs to leave class for an appointment or because they are sick, inform the attendance office 30 MINUTES PRIOR to leave time. This will help us ensure that your student receives a note to leave class in a timely manner. Students will not be excused without a note.
Pre-excused absence forms need to be turned into the Attendance Secretary 24 hours PRIOR to leaving for the absence.
To report an absence, call our attendance line at 503-263-7210 or email chs-attendance@canby.k12.or.us.
Please report an absence as soon as possible and no later than 48 hours after the absence.
Remember that attendance matters and students who attend class regularly are more likely to stay on track, graduate on time, learn deeply, and get the most from their high school experience.
CTE Summit
All Canby School District families and community members are invited to the Canby High School CTE (Career & Technical Education) Summit. Please see the flier below for more information.

Three seniors were celebrated last Wednesday for national signing day. Kali Mull, Tyler Konold, and Andy Soles each signed letters of intent to participate in collegiate sports next year. Kali Mull signed with Cal East Bay to swim next year. Tyler Konold and Andy Soles will both play football at Western Oregon next year. Congratulations to our senior athletes!
Cheer
Congratulations to our Canby cheer team who earned a 4th place finish at the 5A/6A State Championships on Friday February 9th! The team earned a trophy in the Coed Game Day category. Canby scored 33 points in the Situational/Crowd Leading portion of their routine, then 31 points for Fight Song/Band Dance, and a composite score of 30. Their overall score was 94 points, which was enough for a State Cheerleading trophy.
Unified Basketball
On Tuesday, Feb 6, the Canby Unified Basketball Team played a great game against the Rex Putnam Unified Basketball Team. It was a high scoring battle, with the Kingsmen coming out on top, 65-60. Michael Blackman, Hannah Cutsforth and Deleysmi Alcantar Vazquez lead the Cougars on both offense and defense. Canby Unified takes on Estacada Unified on Thursday, February 15 and will be celebrating "Staff Appreciation Night".
Boys Basketball
The boys basketball team has been on a tear the last few weeks, winning four league games in a row. The last win was a dominant 65-40 win over Centennial, avenging an earlier loss. The boys have moved up to a #11 state ranking with a 9-3 league record.
Girls Basketball
On Thursday February 8, the girls lost a defensive game against La Salle 33-44. They will have a chance at avenging their loss tonight at home. The girls currently have an 8-2 league record, and are ranked #13 in the state.
Girls Swimming
Last weekend, the Girls Swim team won the NWOC district title. Going into districts, the girls had the goal of qualifying someone in every event. That goal was accomplished. Eight girls qualified for the state meet, including: Kali Mull, Quincy Taliafaro, Amanda Yancey, Karina Sawatsky, Kathryn Taggart, Micah Nichols, Amy Smith, and Mikayla Knowles. Kali Mull had an outstanding meet winning the 200 freestyle event with 1:57.03, and the 100 freestyle event with 0:53.98. Kali along with Karina Sawatsky, Quincy Taliaferro, and Amanda Yancey won the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. Kali is confident that she can “go faster at State.” Outstanding freshman Quincy Taliafar also dropped times in all of her events, which include the 200 IM Relay, 100 Fly, 500 freestyle, 400 freestyle relay, and the 100 fly. Quincy feels like the team is very supportive, and they have a lot of team unity. Kali, Quincy, and Amanda Yandey all tied for the NWOC Swimmer’s of the Year Award. The girls will compete in the state tournament at the Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center on Friday February 16 at 5:30 pm, and again on Saturday February 17 at 5:30 pm. Good Luck Cougs!
Boys Swimming
The boys swim team also won the NWOC league title. The boys qualified 6 swimmers for the state meet at THAC on February 16-17. The qualifiers include Isaac Beck, Kai Laitinen, Ethan Beck, Alyk House, George VanDenBosch, and Andrew Hayhurst. Overall, the boys did great in the district meet. Most of the boys maintained or improved on their times in the finals. Kai Laitenen broke a 24-year-old Canby record with a 4:51.41 in the 500 freestyle event. Kai improved by almost 10 seconds over the course of the season. Ethan Beck was first in all of his events (200 medley relay, 200 individual medley, 100 fly, and 400 freestyle relay. Ethan says the team is very cohesive and everyone cheers for each other. Ethan also earned NWOC Swimmer of the Year in a 3-way tie.
Boys Wrestling
The boys wrestling team capped off a perfect season beating Centennial in their final dual 59-12. The boys will be competing in the league championship tournament February 16-17 at Wilsonville High School. The boys have 10 wrestlers seeded #1 in their brackets including: Trey Smith (106), Jacob Young (113), Dean Williams (120), Brady Froyd (126), Nico Yazzolino (132), Matthew Young (144), Isaiah Parsons (165), James Keinonen (175), Jackson Doman (215), and Paul Masingila (285). The boys have a total of 17 wrestlers (out of 14 weight classes) seeded to qualify for the State Tournament February 23-24 at the Memorial Coliseum.
Girls Wrestling
The cougar girl wrestlers competed in the SD2 Regional last Friday and Saturday. In this first year after Girls Wrestling becoming an officially adopted OSAA sport, Emilia Ensrud and Maddie Kidwell became Canby’s first regional finalists. Freshman Emilia Ensrud finished in second place and senior Maddie Kidwell is Canby’s first regional Champion. These girls will be competing at the OSAA State Championships February 23-24 at the Memorial Coliseum.
