Arrival & Dismissal Procedures
For the safety of our students, it is important that the following procedures be adhered to when dropping off and picking up students from school.
Walkers
Students who are walking from the Hammonds Mill subdivision must cross at the cross-walk and walk on the sidewalk in front of the primary school and up the sidewalk next to the SMMS side parking lot. The sidewalks are there for student safety; please use them! We cannot have students cutting between cars in the road and in the side parking lot. Students, please watch for traffic. In the afternoon, walkers are dismissed after the buses pull away.
Parent Drop-off and Pick-up
Parent Drop Off
Students may enter the building at 7:15 a.m. Staff members are not available prior to that time to supervise students. For morning drop-off, parents must enter the side parking lot to drop off at the side door. Students will walk to the front to enter the building after 7:15 a.m.
Late arrival in the morning is 7:35 AM.
Picking up before 2:30 PM
Any person checking out a child throughout the day, with or without a prior note being sent to the classroom teacher, must sign out his/her child, Students will not be sent to the office until the parent arrives. The parent must complete the online form to sign his or her student out of school early.
Afternoon pick-up
Afternoon pick-up is in the front circle after the buses pull away at approximately 2:40. Students are not permitted to walk to other locations and meet parents for pick-up. Please be at school for parent pick up by 2:35 PM. Pickup is typically finished by 2:45.
Bus Reminders
Bus students are not permitted to wait outside after exiting the bus; students must come directly into the building after exiting the bus. Remember that riding the bus is a privilege, not a right. Follow the rules and expectations your driver sets.
Pick-ups after 1:45 P.M. are discouraged due to bus traffic and safety issues.
Cell Phone Policy
Parents: Cell phones can be very distracting for students. Please help us in promoting total engagement in class by supporting our cell phone policy.
If cell phones or wireless headphones /earbuds are brought to school, the phones and wireless headphones/earbuds are required to be turned off and kept in the student lockers. Cell phones are not permitted to be used on school property to make phone calls, take pictures, check social media, or text during the school hours from 7:15 - 2:30. If the student must be contacted, parents may call our school at (304) 274- 5030. If student have their phones out, the following consequences will be given:
- 1st Offense- Warning - Student places the phone in his or locker.
- 2nd Offense- Student brings the phone to the main office for storage in the safe. Parents are contacted. The student may pick up the phone at the end of the day.
- 3rd Offense-Phone is confiscated. Parents are contacted. The student may pick up the phone at the end of the day.
- 4th Offense – Phone is confiscated. Parents are contacted. Parent must pick up the phone.
This policy also applies to possession of a cell phone, regardless of the phone’s ownership.
Student Dress Code
SMMS follows the Berkeley County Dress Code. Please click here to review that policy with your student.
Progressive Discipline Policy
Over the summer, a team of staffulty from SMMS worked to refine and revise our Progressive Discipline Policy. Our new process guarantees that parents will be contacted for Steps 2-5, providing more opportunities for us to work together to encourage positive choices.
We encourage you to speak with your student about the policy, as he or she should be able to share details with you. Please reach out to a staffulty member with any questions.
