February 5-9
This week is counselor appreciation week! Take a few moments this week to show how grateful we are to Ms. Ayoka Smith, our amazing counselor. She delivers counseling lessons, mangages 504s, works with small groups, handles daily conflicts and crisis situations and has an endless stream of students in her office. Thank you, Ms. Smith, for all you do!
Class Valentine's Day Parties will be held on Wednesday, February 14th at 2:15pm. Third grade may begin the party by 1:30 to end prior to specials.
Growth and Achievement Awards
This Friday, February 9th are our Growth and Achievement Awards in the APR:
- 9:05-9:45 - grades K/1
- 9:50-10:30 - grades 2/3
- 2:30-3:10 - grades 4/5
As we get closer to the Growth and Achievement Awards ceremony, please make sure you complete the following. First, identifying students who have earned the non-academic awards. Prepare to send those students' family letter home no later than 2/7. Complete the certificates by writing in students' names and signing the awards. We will complete the family letters for the Academic achievement award and principal's award. We will get you those letters no later than 2/7. If there are any questions or concerns, please reach out to Sheldon Mizelle!
Zooming into Code Purple PD
Never taught virtually? Need a refresher since you have a mental block from those "covid days"? The thought of a code purple day makes your heart pound? Join us for an optional PD session on Monday, February 5th at 3:30pm in the Media Center. We will be covering the following:
- zoom basics and best practices
- document cameras during virtual instruction
- applications to support virtual learning such as: nearpod, peardeck, jamboard and Kami
- posting on myMCPS classroom
**We will have multiple facilitators, so if staff need differentiated support, we can accommodate it!
Zoom Practice
During the last part of our Tuesday, February 13 staff meeting, we will be inviting parents and students to join zoom as a 10-minute practice.

Student-Centered Instructional Rounds
Leadership Team members will engage in Student-Centered Instructional Rounds starting February 12 through February 23. Coverage will be provided for classroom teachers on leadership to observe. When a leadership team member comes into your room, just know they are observing a particular student to
Family Dance Night

Grade 1 Changes
In order to lower class sizes in the first grade, Ms. Irby will be taking on a group of approximately 18 students to be the reading/writing teacher of record. Ms. Kepler will be taking on a similar sized group (different students) to be the math teacher of record. Homeroom classes will remain the same, as will specials and all other activities.

-Tuesday, 2/6, PTA meeting @ 7pm!
-Friday, 2/16, come move your feet and have some fun at our MHES Family Dance. Snacks, beverages, and baked goods will be available for purchase.
-Friday, 2/23, is the annual Ice Skating Party at the Rockville Ice Arena. Tickets will be on sale shortly and a portion of any purchases from the concession stand will go to the school.
