SHES Weekly Update

Good Afternoon SHES Families!

We had another wonderful week at Shadow Hills. Our school was a beacon of kindness for all. To end an eventful week, we had our Father Daughter Dance outside under the stars. The details and laughter were everywhere, making this night truly special. Thank you so much to our invincible PTA for bringing another tradition back for our students, families, and community. Please keep an eye out for more events.

We will be offering three different COVID testing sites this week. The Monday testing site at Joan MacQueen Middle will offer the saliva COVID test and Wednesday and Friday at Shadow Hills Elementary will offer the nasal swab COVID test. All sites are open to the general public.

We are anticipating that we will have low attendance over the next few weeks due to COVID. Please remember to call the school office if your child has any symptoms. We will be providing work for all students who are absent and are asking that parents complete the electronic signature package as soon as you are able to do so and then to return the completed work as soon as your child returns to school. Thank you for your support!

Our school is participating in the District wide No Place For Hate Project. No Place For Hate is a program designed to engage our students and staff in dialogue and active learning on the topics of bias, bullying, inclusion and friendship. At the end of the school year, Shadow Hills will become a No Place Hate for Hate certified school after completing three projects that have been approved by the our No Place For Hate liaison. In early Fall our students completed a Pledge Signing where they all pledged that our campus is No Place for Hate. In October, our school completed our first project called "We all Fit Together" in which all students were given a piece of a puzzle and asked to decorate to best express who they are. The puzzle pieces were then put together to spell out Shadow Hills Hawks. It was an amazing project and the student loved seeing the final product. For our second project we will be focusing on kindness and this project will take place the month of February. Our second project will focus on kindness. We will be reading a story school wide about jelly donuts and creating our own jelly donut complete with "sprinkles of kindness." We also will be having classroom discussions on how we can spread kindness, be inclusive and an ally to others. This will also roll in to our school wide reading buddies program we will be starting in the Spring where we will be pairing older and younger students together to read.

The second Diagnostic is an important benchmark for understanding your student’s growth, which is why it’s so important they try their best. These results allow us to better support them in achieving their growth goals for the year.

The most important thing we can do is prepare students and motivate them to put forth their best effort.

Here are a few things you can do to help support your student:

• Make sure they get a good night’s rest before taking the Diagnostic!
• Talk to your student about why the second Diagnostic is important. You can say things like:
• The second Diagnostic helps you find out how much progress you’ve made since the beginning of the year.
• It allows your teacher and I to celebrate your accomplishments!
• Try your best, and do not rush—but don’t spend too much time on a question either.
• Remember, questions on the Diagnostic change based on your answers to earlier questions. You will see some questions you don’t know. That is okay! Just try your best.
• Let them know you’re excited to celebrate their progress.
• Thank you for your continued partnership in your student’s learning.

As most of you know by now, one of our AUSD families is in great need of our love and support. The Hayworth family has two students at BOES. In December of 2018, Luke was diagnosed with leukemia. The District and community came together like never before and rallied around Luke and his family. While Luke is in remission now, he is still undergoing treatment. On Christmas Day of this year, the Hayworth's baby girl, Ruby, was diagnosed with leukemia. This news is unfathomable and it is impossible to understand how this can happen to the same family twice. From the bottom of our hearts, we are asking that our school community surround the Hayworth family in love and positive thoughts.

Hello Shadow Hills families!

Thank you to our entire district for showing up and supporting our Father/Daughter dance, which was a huge success! It was a magical night under the stars. Thank you to everyone who made this night possible. We could not do this without your support! We look forward to continuing to make events like this happen! We strive to make our school the best it can be! Please look for a link to share your pictures this Wednesday! Our next BIG event is our Mother/Son event happening in February! Can’t wait to share that with you!

All apparel orders will be delivered to your child’s teacher Wednesday. If you have any issues or questions, please reach out to Claudia at 619-971-8021. If you missed your chance to purchase, we will be selling apparel before and after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Birthday table will be set up to celebrate our monthly birthdays the last Monday of each month for the remainder of the year!

Lastly, please don’t forget Tomorrow is the LAST day to submit your child’s artwork for this year’s Yearbook!

Winner will be announced Wednesday, along with an upload link to share your pictures for the Yearbook! The winner will receive a free Yearbook!

There will be so many additional things happening this month, including our Garden docent launch, and our Revamped Art docent program!
