BHS Bucks Principal's Update

Spring is knocking on our door and we are ready to answer the call! As our winter sports draw to a close, our spring sports are gearing up for a break in the weather to start their seasons. I would be remiss to not mention the incredible performance of our female winter athletes. On the heels of celebrating 50 years of Title IX, our female athletes have quite an impressive showing this year!! I've included the many accomplishments from those athletes below.

Not only are our Bucks doing great things athletically, our drama class had an outstanding performance this past weekend. Twelve cast members and their crew, under the direction of Mrs. Moray, had a full auditorium on performance nights as they presented "Canceled" by M. Robert Grunwald. It was entertaining to watch and see the growth of students as they stepped out of their comfort zones to try something new.

As a reminder to families, our spring break falls a little earlier than normal this year. Our week ends with a half day for students and parent/teacher conferences on Thursday, March 17. We do not have school on Friday, March 18th. We wish you all a very safe and relaxing spring break. BHS will continue to use virtual conferences. Our staff is committed to speak with as many parents as possible so they have opened their schedules to accommodate evening hours earlier in the week as well as the regularly scheduled date on Thursday. Each teacher has their own link to schedule a conference. You may begin to schedule conferences as early as Wednesday, March 9th when the links go live. We have our survey results compiled for all grades 7-11. We have begun the process of assigning courses to teachers to start the creation of the master schedule. Once that is done, students will begin the scheduling process and teachers will be submitting recommendations for Honors level courses.

Winter NWEA testing is complete for 8th graders. Students who took the NWEA test will be given their results to take home on Monday, March 7th. A brief snapshot of Math and Reading results can be found below.

With the coming of spring, comes state testing. As we move into mid-March, we prepare for our M-Step assessments, as well as our PSAT/SAT assessments. This April, 8th graders will be taking the M-Step as well as PSAT 8/9. Our 9th graders will be taking the PSAT 8/9 as well. 10th graders are taking the PSAT 10, and the 11th graders will be taking the SAT, ACT WorkKeys, and the M-Step. Seniors do not have any testing obligations.

ATTENTION SENIORS! Jostens will be delivering graduation products (not caps and gowns) on Monday, March 7 during lunch. A statement will be sent if you have a balance due. Please pay online or call 1-800-JOSTENS to pay by debit or credit card 24-hours in advance. Jostens will only accept cash or money order at delivery. CHECKS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AS PAYMENT.

Lilly Hardin (11th grader) has the second best Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) score on the certification exam in the state! The top-performing students in the state are invited to participate in the 2022 Microsoft Office Specialist US National Championship in Dallas and Lilly could be one of those students. She is currently #2 in the qualifying round.

Our 8th grade Science students have been doing many hands-on activities this semester. Mrs. Lentz has ignited a spark of wonder and excitement in her classes as students learn about the wonders of the earth by using National Geographic kits. They built volcanoes, investigated rocks and minerals, cracked open geodes, and created 3D models of the ocean floor with Legos.

Congratulations to our Lady Bucks who showed up and took names on the court this last week in their District Championship! The next level of competition is Tuesday night in Hartford for regionals. Congratulations to our Bucks and Coach Miller!

Our students visited the senior center once again to help our more experienced members of society learn to use technology.

Kaitlynne Walter competed at the MHSAA state meet this past weekend and finished her high school wrestling career in 4th place! Congratulations to Coach Riggs and way to go Kaitlynne!

Our community based FIRST Robotics team has been diligently working on building their robot to compete this season. The first competition will be held at St. Joe High School on March 11, & 12. They have a quick turn around for their second competition which will be held at Orchard View High School in Muskegon on March 18 & 19. Admission is free to watch the events and our team would love to see some student and community support. Congratulations to Faith Bartley (sophomore) who took 1st place in her weight class at the state powerlifting meet this weekend. Her squat was 235 pounds, 110 bench press, and 325 deadlift. That's a strong Buck!!! Way to go Faith!
