October is a busy month in our Chinook community! Willamette Valley Pie sales are due, Read N Lead kicks off a new chapter, we get to show Chinook staff our appreciation with a hot meal during conferences and our community favorite Fall Festival is at the end of the month.

At its heart, Read N Lead is a PTSA sponsored way to encourage our students to read! We've updated our program this year to make success more accessible. Rather than tracking minutes read, we've developed a Bingo game with lots of fun reading related activities included. There is a Bingo card for Kindergarten-2nd graders and one for 3rd-5th graders. Your student should have received their October Bingo card at this time. If not, click HERE to head to our website to download a new one.

Your student will turn in their Bingo card to their teacher by the 3rd of each following month. The cards will be used in a monthly raffle to win a prize. The classes with the highest participation rates will get a prize for all who participated. Periodically, there will be a bonus drawing for students who complete a mystery portion of their Bingo cards, like 4 corners, 2 bingos or even a blackout! Your student is encouraged to do as many activities each month as they can.

We sent home a yellow sheet outlining our new program including two other ideas to help get your student excited about reading. The first is a pledge to help you and your young reader develop some goals about their reading this year. This pledge is intended for you to keep and check in on every now then and to work with your reader to accomplish over the year. No worries if you sent yours in, we'll get them back to you in November.

The second piece is a way for your reader to share their favorite book with the Chinook community. Cut off the bottom of the pledge sheet, fill in with a book review, and bring in or check out your book for Mrs. Cast to display around the library in the month of October. Don't worry, she'll make sure to get your book back to you at the end of the month!

During our upcoming conferences the PTSA provides a "soup buffet" for lunch on Thursday. We need your help to in providing a nourishing soup, rolls or dessert to show some love to our hardworking teachers and staff. Items will need to be at school by 11 am and picked up by 3 pm. Our Chinook community comes out in force to enjoy our Fall Festival! The Festival will take place this year in the gym and outdoors on Friday evening, October 28th. It includes a Trunk or Treat as well as games. Costumes add to the fun, but are not required. Our Fall Festival inspires so many smiles on our students' faces!

Please join us in volunteering to help our event run smoothly. Click HERE to head to the volunteer sign up page. If this spooky season inspires you, we're in search of a coordinator for our festival. We are also in need of folks to help decorate, direct attendees, create Trunks and donate candy. Our goal this year is to have 100 bags of candy donated!

***Important: We need our volunteer slots filled by Tuesday, October 18th, or the event will have to be cancelled. This is a family loved tradition, let's come together to make it happen!

Do you have like new books at home your readers have outgrown? If so, please donate them to our Chinook community. Your used books will turn into prizes to help encourage our young readers! Books are being collected in the office and given new life in the hands of Chinook students.

Pup Bucks is a no-hassle, 100% tax deductible contribution that goes directly to the PTSA to support our children and school community. By participating now, you can choose to be done with PTSA fundraisers for the entire year! This new program lets you live guilt-free from participating in future PTSA fundraisers for the school year- however, we do welcome your participation as you choose!

Pup Bucks will be used to fund programs that are not in the school district budget. It takes approximately $100 PER STUDENT each year to reach all PTSA program goals. It’s time to wrap up our Payback Book fundraiser! If you have not already done so, take a moment to look through your sample Payback Book and check out all the great savings to places like Parkrose, Chuck’s, Champ Pizza, Kid’s Club, and more! Will you help future up our library? Ms. Cast would love to get our students thinking about their future by hanging collegiate flags in her library. Send in your college's flag to have your college represented!

If you purchased a yearbook last year but have not yet picked it up, you'll be hearing from someone soon to arrange pick-up or delivery.
