Sherwood Schools: District Updates
January 20, 2022
Thank you SSD Teachers and Staff!
As the surge of COVID-19 continues to impact our district, we are still experiencing a high number of staff absences each day. In response to this, teachers and staff across the District continue to go above and beyond in all ways -- from covering classes during prep periods, to working extra hours to fill additional roles -- the list goes on and on! A huge thank you to all SSD staff members for all of their hard work in supporting the learning needs of our students, and supporting our schools in their goal to prioritize in-person instruction.
Changes to 2021-22 Calendar
As our district continues to explore ways to support all teachers and staff, we’ve identified some strategies that will be employed immediately. One of those strategies is to implement two employee wellness days into the calendar over the course of the coming months, to provide staff with an opportunity to tend to the fatigue and additional workload they have faced this school year. Last night, the Board of Directors approved the addition of those two employee wellness days to the 2021-22 calendar, scheduled for Friday, February 18 and Friday, April 29. These dates will be non-school days for all students. To view the updated 2021-22 school year calendar, please click here.
Contact Tracing Update
With the significant increase in contact tracing workload impacting school districts state-wide, including here in Sherwood where our district is continuing to receive a record number of student and staff COVID case reports, this week the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) and the Washington County Public Health Department released an update to contact tracing guidance for schools to utilize during the current case surge. In this update, OHA no longer requires quarantine for masked indoor close contacts, regardless of distance. This includes contacts identified in the following settings:
Classrooms, bathrooms, hallways
School buses
School-related extracurricular activities where universal masking is implemented
This change does not impact unmasked indoor contacts, such as those that occur during meals or extracurricular activities where masks are not worn. Outdoor close contacts in K-12 settings continue to be exempt from quarantine.
Our Health Services Department will implement this adjustment in guidance during the contact tracing process going forward. To help minimize the risk of quarantine for your child, we encourage families to review the importance of keeping masks on consistently indoors and on the school bus, as required by the current mask mandate. We will continue to update you with any future changes to COVID-related guidance from our state and regional agencies.
