Notes from the School Nurse
Hello Parents/Guardians!
As we are now into cold/flu season and also still dealing with COVID-19, this note serves as a gentle reminder regarding a few things related to student health.
WHEN TO KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME FROM SCHOOL
1. Sick children need to be kept home from school; to include excessive coughing, sore throat, runny nose/congestion, vomiting, and/or high body temperatures (fever). Resting at home will help them get better more quickly and will prevent them from exposing other children or the staff to their illness.

Attendance
Please note, we have implemented a Google form for submission of absences/late arrivals and notes. This form is the only acceptable method of communication and must be utilized for reporting absences/late arrivals and uploading doctor/medical notes ONLY for your student(s). With the exception of COVID reporting in which an email in addition to the absence form must be sent to Nurse Ann (sally.warf@pgcps.org), Dr. Fryson (tfryson@cmitelementary.org) and Mrs. Virgil (evirgil@cmitelementary.org). Double Good Popcorn
It's almost time for another amazing fundraiser, our Double Good popcorn sale! This year the event will run from Tuesday March 14th - Saturday March 18th. Please note you have more than one child both of them will use the SAME fundraising page for this. Below are the step-by-step instructions. Hello Kindergarten Families,
Please check the weather daily, so your scholar is dressed appropriately for outdoor recess. Please make sure that you are reading any messages via dojo, class story, or emails pertaining to your scholar’s class.
Homework is posted by the end of the day on Fridays, for the upcoming week. Please make sure that your scholar is completing their homework assignments, they are graded on completion weekly. If your scholar is in enrichment, please provide your scholar with a homework journal daily, so they can work on the assignments in enrichment.

We are planning on a field-trip for our kindergartners this year, if you are interested in being a chaperone, please make sure you have been cleared through the pgcps.
If you signed your scholar up for clubs, their afternoon dismissal is for them to be in holding with the enrichment scholars. Please remember the days that your scholar is in a club, if they are usually a car or van rider, they will not be at their regular scheduled dismissal area. If for some reason, they are not to go to their club that day, please notify your scholar’s teacher ahead of time, so they can be at the correct dismissal location.
ELA: We will work on identifying common sounds that letter represents. Our sight words that we are reviewing: give, little, away, encourage your scholars to create sentences using these sight words is a great way to help remember each word.
Math: We will be finishing up on Topic 11 in math next week, and will be getting ready for our math assessment.
Science: We will discuss what plants need to survive, and how can we help to take care of plants that are in our home.
Social Studies: We will continue to discuss being safe in our neighborhood, and who can help us to stay safe in our neighborhood. Examples: walking in a cross-walk, staying with an adult, not talking with strangers, being safe at a park.
Health: We will discuss having a healthy mindset, creating peace and calmness, by learning how to slowly breathe.
Friendly reminder: Class dojo is one of our main forms of communication for any classroom activities, events, and messages. Please make sure that you are connected to your scholar’s Class dojo. Teacher emails and the communication folder are other ways to stay connected as well.

Please provide a nut free snack for your scholar daily.
Your scholar should have a full set of extra change of clothes (uniform) that can be kept in their cubbies.
Please label all of your scholar’s items, sweaters, jackets, water bottles, lunch bags.
If your scholar’s form of transportation changes for dismissal, please complete the necessary forms and upload into the document, as well as notify your scholar’s teacher.

Additionally, please ensure that your child is dressed warmly when they arrive to school in the mornings. We have outdoor recess at 10:20 a.m. if the temperature is at or above 32 degrees. It is important that students are dressed appropriately for the weather.

Sensational Second Graders
This week in Reading, we will be working on Unit 3 Week 3. Throughout week 3, we will continue to focus on traditional tales. We will be reading and comparing two versions of Cinderella - Interstellar Cinderella and Cendrillon: An Island Cinderella. We will be taking our weekly reading test. This will test our knowledge on this week's vocabulary words (stranded, mechanic, blossoms, expensive, and forgave), words with r-controlled vowels, and reading comprehension.
In Math, we will continue with the second half of Topic 8. Now that we have finished the money portion, we will be moving on to telling time to 5 minutes. Please feel free to work on these skills at home. Online clock tool: https://toytheater.com/clock/
In Science, we will be talking about the surface of Earth changes and what causes those changes to happen.
In Social Studies, we will discuss how climate can affect crops.
We are in need of tissues. With the cold and flu season in full affect, we are going through our supplies fairly quickly.
Please ensure scholars are coming to school dressed for the winter weather. We have recess at 10:50 a.m. and will be going outside if the temperature is above 32 degrees.

Terrific Third Graders
In Reading, students will continue with Historical Fiction. They will compare and contrast Little House on the Prairie and By the Shores of Silver Lake. They will continue to work on prefixes and suffixes.
In Social Studies, students will begin Chapter 3: Lesson 5 Early English Communities.
In Math, we are going through a review topic where scholars are using their knowledge of place values to multiply large numbers. Scholars will be grouping factors using the Associative Property, and decomposing factors using the Distributive Property.
In Science, scholars are finishing up our topic on climate, looking at factors that help us describe the climate of a region.

We strongly encourage parents to check SchoolMax weekly to stay abreast of your scholar's progress in all academic areas. Students can redo eligible assignments within a week of being posted. Weekly check-ins with your scholar about his/her grades is a great way to set goals and reflect on progress.
We are in need of hand sanitizers, disinfecting wipes, and facial tissues. The cold and flu season is upon us and we would like to continue to keep our classrooms germ free.

Team 5th Grade, we made it to the final full week in February of 2023! Next week, we will finalize our Black History Month celebrations by displaying all of our creative work for our STEM historical figures! Your posters and essays are due February 24th and your wax figure museum display will be held on February 28, 2023! We can't wait to see your hard work in action! Way to go Tigers!
March Women's Month
Next week, we will begin exploring the impact that women have had in STEM history and we will begin our PowerPoint presentations that will be due at the end of March! We will keep you posted!
RELA
This week in RELA, we finished U3W2. We have begun U3W3. We are reading Drama! We are focusing on Synthesizing Information, and Analyzing Elements of Drama. In Writing we are learning Possessive Pronouns, and wrapping up our Black History Month Essays! Students have been working SO hard. We cannot wait to see their hard work pay off on February 28th, during our Wax Museum!
Social Studies
We are continuing the journey of exploring the Life in the Young Republic and the Westward Expansion! Students are delving into the impact of how our society and economy changed after westward migration and expansion in the New World! We will assess the Life in the Young Republic and migrate into the Westward Expansion lessons. Let's continue this expansive adventure! Way to go tigers!
Math
In math, this week students will:
1. divide unit fractions by non-zero whole numbers and solve problems using division.
2. Add and subtract mixed numbers.
Science
In science, we will review science skills and concepts in preparation for the MISA test next week! Let's go Tigers!

Art
Greetings,
Tigers have presentations this week and next. Classes will primarily consist of independent work to finish their projects and critiques. Projects include portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, abstract, and other activities that develop their understanding of depth of field and value. We will continue to stress craftsmanship as a priority.
Music
Students are learning about and comparing Black musicians for BHM, and discussing the legacy they’ve left on western music. We are diving into musicians we already know and love, and enjoying the music from older artists we’ve never seen before, too!
Technology
K-2 practiced:
Tynker-All About Computers I
Students learn what computers are, the basic types and parts
of a computer and a few examples of the many amazing things we can do with computers.
3-5 practiced:
Tynker-All About Computers II
In this course,students learn about how computers can help us to do many fun and useful activities in our everyday lives. They also learn how some professions use computers to help them with their work and what the internet is and how it is useful.
PE
This week, students will be learning about strength and endurance, and will be able to differentiate between the two.
