Newsletter 2 Term 2

Kia ora e te whanau. There have been a lot of exciting things happening at school, both with the learning and behind the scenes.

We are excited for our Matariki celebration next week, the learning about the Maori New Year and the opportunities that new beginnings give us. ShowQuest is rapidly approaching and the tamariki involved have been practicing hard. If you can get along to see this, you will not be disappointed.

A number of classes are heading out of school on Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) trips over the next few weeks in a range of experiences from scootering the loop, to challenging their physical ability at Flip Out. Some very brave children and staff are going to take the plunge in a mid-winter swim at the foreshore. We are always grateful for the whanau support that enables these trips to happen.

Staff had a very successful Accord staff only day, prior to Queens Birthday weekend, continuing our learning journey to embed Te Reo Māori me ona tikanga. Our next Accord day will be on the 27th of August, the Friday that coincides with our mid-term break on Monday the 30th of August.

On Wednesday the 9th of June we welcomed a new cohort of New Entrants into room 21 with Whaea Indira. We are delighted to have you all join us here at OPS as you begin your learning journey.

We do a lot of cool learning at Onerahi Primary School and we would love to share some examples with you.

Here at Onerahi Primary we have some amazing students achieving success not only in school but outside of it. We would like to recognise the following superstar this month. We are so proud of you Scarlett Callagher of rm 17 for your huge efforts in reading and raising money for such a worthy cause.

Throughout the month of June, Scarlett has been reading like mad to raise awareness and money for Blind Low Vision New Zealand. BLVNZ support children who are deaf, blind, or have low vision and their families. They provide a braille library, technology, support and counselling to enable people to live a full and awesome life the way they choose to.

Scarlett pledged to read 5 books every day during the month of June. She had a goal of raising $100, and thanks to the support of family and friends she has smashed her goal, raising a whopping $600. Way to go Scarlett! For her efforts she has received a supporters pack containing a T-shirt, poster and stickers. There have been rewards and competitions to enter all month.

During her reading journey, Scarlett has discovered you can borrow 50 books at a time from the Whangarei library, but as they are very heavy, 20 is the limit to carry!

Scarlett's parents are very proud of her efforts and grateful for the support of friends and family. They are hoping to foster a love of doing for others and making the world a better place. What a great focus this is. They have noticed the opportunities along the way to expand both Scarlett's and the families vocabulary, googling words that are unfamiliar. And have been delighted to see that not only has Scarlett's love of reading continued to grow, but also her appreciation for a range of different topics.

A big thank you for your ongoing support with Book Club. Your support enables us to purchase more library books.

The Hell Reading Challenge will be running all year and students have until Jan 2022 to claim their free snack pizza from Hell Pizza. Junior students can earn stamps by telling their teacher or Kirsty about the books they have been reading. Senior students can earn stamps by doing an extension activity. Examples of extension activities are book reviews, book cover design, or character reviews.

Something exciting is beginning in rooms 1, 2, and 5. Kim Nuwell and Maggie Buxton are local artists with a range of experience and expertise. They are becoming involved with our school as part of the Creative in Schools programme. This programme was set up to encourage children and teachers across New Zealand to connect with professional artists, develop new skills, and highlight the range of opportunities the Arts can provide us.

On Thursday Maggie and Kim had their first session with the three classrooms. Children got to show Maggie and Kim around the school, pointing out the places that were important to them. When they returned to class they got to see the technology they would be learning about: augmented reality. You can already see the children’s minds ticking over as they think of the possibilities.
While we are still in the first few steps of this partnership, one of our broad end goals is for children to create a range of art pieces that can be positioned around the school. When these pieces of art are viewed through an app on a tablet or phone they will become animated or play pre-recorded sounds. This could lead to a trail around our school that celebrates our past and present, and shares insights into our students’ hopes for the future.

As always, updates will come through ClassDojo, Facebook, and our school newsletter. We also have a few video projects planned to share our progress. We can’t wait to see what the students, along with Mr. Blithe, Miss McInnes, Miss Kronfeld, Maggie, and Kim, achieve over the next two terms.

Our spare clothing bin has been depleted of late, if you have any you are able to donate for students who may have a need during the day, please bring these in to the office. We are after a range of sizes if at all possible. Thanks!

The school is required to have held an additional 6 accord teacher only days by mid 2022. We have held our first one on the 3rd of February, ahead of the start of school and our second one on Thursday the 1st of April ahead of Easter. The 3rd was on Friday 04 June. We have scheduled the remaining day this year for Friday the 27th of August ahead of our Mid-Term break on Monday the 30th August. We ask you to make note of this day as the school will not be open to students and appreciate your support as we continue to develop our practice. The remaining two days will be held in 2022.

We have had a supply of 2021 honey cleverly made by the bees in our hives, delivered to our school. Now is a great time to buy! Still only a bargain $5 a jar, available at the school office. Cash only.

Please could our community ensure they are not parking in the drop off zone on Church St and leaving their vehicles, this is a 1 minute zone only for the drop off of students. We also remind you all not to park across the school driveway. This not only blocks access for cars coming in or out, but also places our students at risk. Thank you all for your assistance.

We have 2 options for school lunches. Both are ordered through your lunchonline account. If you do not yet have an account head to lunchonline.co.nz and sign up to take advantage of this service. Orders must be in by 8am on the day of delivery or they will not be processed. A further reminder to ensure that all student information is updated regularly in your lunchonline account, including room numbers to ensure that ordered lunches reach their recipients quickly and easily on delivery.

AUTUMN/WINTER

With the weather turning and cooling and rain becoming more likely we would like to remind you that it is a good idea for children to bring raincoats and a change of clothes along to school. Covered shoes are suggested. We would like all of these items to be clearly named so they can be returned to your children should they be left behind.

There are two eating breaks within the day, taken at times that suit each class. Please ask your child's teacher when their times are.

Medication: If your child requires medication be brought to or kept at school, please be aware that due to health and safety concerns, this must be kept secure in the school sick bay. It is not to be kept in children’s schoolbags during the day. This is to protect the safety of not only the child requiring the medication but also all other students. All medication requires an accompanying permission/approval form signed by their parent or caregiver. This includes epi-pens for allergy management, inhalers for asthma or any other medication your child requires on a short-term or as needed basis.
