Kennedale High School - September 2022-23 Edition
Freshman Overcomes Obstacles and finds success on the KHS Archery Team
Emma is one of the 62 student-athletes on the KHS Archery Team, but Emma shoots one-handed. Emma was born with one arm, but this has not stopped her from making the KHS Archery team, which has consistently ranked in the Top 5 or 10 programs in Texas for the past few years.
With the help of a prosthetic, a stand, and a custom base built by former KISD Board Member and longtime KISD volunteer Joe Taylor, Emma has been hitting the bulls-eye in recent weeks. At KHS, there is a place for every student to succeed.
The Head Coach and founder of the KHS Archery Team is Danny Wilcox, KHS Science Teacher.

Five KHS Seniors Earn National Recognition by The College Board
Congratulations to Adetola Awe, Briesnah Gomez, Megan Cerda, Nevyn Johnson, and Valeria Castro, who were five of 62,000 students from across the country to earn academic honors from the College Board’s National Recognition Programs!
These National Recognition Programs grant underrepresented students with academic honors that can be included on college and scholarship applications and connect students with universities across the country, helping them stand out during the admissions process. Colleges and scholarship programs use these honors to identify students from underrepresented groups through College Board’s Student Search Service.
These Wildcats earned this recognition by excelling on their PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, or AP Exams and in their classrooms. Students who may be eligible have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and have excelled on the PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT 10, or earned a score of 3 or higher on two or more AP Exams; and are African American or Black, Hispanic American or Latinx, Indigenous, and/or attend school in a rural area or small town. Eligible students are invited to apply during their sophomore or junior year, and are awarded at the beginning of the next school year.

We also help students discover and explore multiple career paths that best fit their capabilities and interests.

Hispanic Heritage Month - Celebrating our Students
This is Samuel Medrano, KHS Sophomore.
Besides being a great student, Samuel participates in the Charreada or CharrerĂa, which is a Mexican tradition that includes celebrations of culture, rodeo, equestrian activities, and traditional forms of livestock.
Samuel’s specialty is Coleadero, or arena bull tailing.
This challenge consists of catching a bull by its tail and pulling it to the ground. The bull is released from the gate and the charro rides alongside at full gallop. He must grab the bull’s tail and use it to cause the bull to fall to the ground all within a distance of 60 meters in order to score points.

KHS 2022-23 School Meals
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Congress authorized spending that allowed schools to serve free meals for all students. Those funds are not authorized to continue for the 2022-2023 school year and as a result, Kennedale ISD must return to charging for school meals and offering free and reduced-price meals based on student eligibility. Families are encouraged to complete the Application for Free and Reduced-Price School Meals at http://schoollunchapp.com/.
The application will determine a child’s eligibility for free and reduced-price meals and may assist in the determination of eligibility for other state or federal benefits. Only one application needs to be completed per household. Schools will notify the household of the child’s eligibility. The Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) administers school nutrition programs in Texas and offers an eligibility calculator, available at www.SquareMeals.org/ProgramEligibility.
Applications may be submitted anytime during the school year. The information households provide on the application will be used for the purpose of determining eligibility. Applications may also be verified by the school officials at any time during the school year.
For more information regarding the free and reduced meals application, please visit https://www.kennedaleisd.net/freeandreducedapplication or email childnutritionservices@kisdtx.net
If you do not qualify for free or reduced meals, you may begin depositing money into student accounts at any time through MySchoolBucks to prepare for the cost of school lunches next year.

KHS Student Parking Permit Application
If your student is at least 16 years old, has a valid Texas Drivers License, has liability insurance on one or more vehicle, and plans to drive to campus, you and your student must complete and sign the KHS 2022-23 Student Parking Permit Application (see link below).
- Student Parking Permits are $30, and payment may be made by cash/check to KHS. Payments may be made at any time in the KHS Front Office.
- Students are encouraged to complete applications and bring payment to their in-person registration day the week of August 8-12, 2022; however, any student driving to campus at the beginning of the year must have permit applications completed and approved and fee paid by Friday, September 2, 2022.
- Students and parents should be together at the time the online application is completed, as both signatures are required.
- You will also need to upload photos of the STUDENT DRIVER LICENSE and LIABILITY INSURANCE ID CARD when completing the online application. Please have these documents available before competing the application.
- NOTE: Students who drive to school do not automatically qualify for off-campus lunch privileges. Students must be Seniors (at least 18 credits) or be Juniors enrolled in a CTE Practicum to qualify for off-campus lunch, which requires an additional permission form.

LOCKERS
Lockers will be available to students during 2022-23, unless KISD COVID-safety restrictions tighten during the year. Lockers are not required; however, students have the option to claim a locker during student registration.
Lockers will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis at registration. Lockers may be shared; however, both students sharing a locker must register the locker with the main office. We encourage students to keep locker combinations confidential and to not share their combinations with other students. Lockers are optional; however, all students are encouraged to keep valuables such as cell phones and personal items secure at all times. Lockers that have been selected by students and are not available will be marked with colored tape.
KISD 2022-23 Student Dress Code
School Supplies
We recommend waiting for the first week of school to see what additional supplies are needed for students. Teachers will provide students with individual course needs when school starts. Because each student is issued a Chromebook and KHS has many online textbooks and instructional resources, many assignments are completed digitally. Our goal is to keep school supply needs to a minimum.
New KISD Clear Backpack Policy
KISD will improve the safety measures currently in place by requiring all students in grades 6-12 to use clear backpacks beginning with the 2022-2023 school year. Students participating in extracurricular activities will be permitted to carry non-transparent bags to store items related to their particular activity (i.e. band, athletics, etc.). All extracurricular activity bags must be stored in lockers or designated areas upon entry into school. While we understand that clear bags are not going to prevent all safety threats; they may be a deterrent for students bringing any inappropriate items to school and will further enhance our multi-measured approach to increasing school safety.
Clear bags and backpacks are just another safety measure in our comprehensive plan to increase safety and security in our schools as well as athletic and fine arts venues. KISD is also installing safety vestibules in schools, giving school personnel the ability to control who can access the building. We are also upgrading and increasing the number of surveillance cameras across the district.
Although we are living in a difficult time requiring difficult decisions from school districts we must continue to be vigilant to protect the safety of our students and staff. We ask for everyone’s patience, understanding, and support as we look at ways to modify our practices and procedures to enhance our campuses and keep our students and staff safe.
