SCIENCE UPDATE
Mole Day 2023
October 23 was MOLE DAY! Science teachers were singing "Tha Mole" song as they were getting ready. A mole is the SI standard unit of count. Like a dozen or a pair, a mole is a word that represents a number- in this case 6.02 x 10^23 things. That's 602 with twenty-one zeros after it! So 10-23 is internationally recognized as Mole Day.
Our science teachers celebrate in a variety of ways, including lots of fun demonstrations with dry ice, liquid nitrogen, and other materials. Mr. Miller's class made liquid nitrogen ice cream, blew up some containers with dry ice, and watched some mole videos.

CAD and Metals Students Participate in Manufacturing Day
The CAD & Design Technology Manufacturing Day tours started at Alro Steel where the students were able to see how they design steel parts in the CAD department. They then learned more about the history of Alro Steel and how they have become a global leader in the steel and plastic supply industry. We also watched a video showing their state of the art facility in Potterville. They finished the stop at Alro with a walk through tour of the entire facility which allowed them to see the many different types of finish processes they can do to steel at Alro. Another unique thing about the Alro Steel CAD department is that at least four former SJHS CAD students work there!
The second stop on the Manufacturing Day tour was at Roberts Sinto in Grand Ledge. At Sinto the students started off with a fantastic lunch from Subway complements of Sinto. Then they toured The Sinto facility starting off again in the CAD department seeing how they design the robotic conveyor systems for industry. Next, we toured their ceramics division to see how they are manufacturing ceramic components for many applications in industry. Students were able to watch a HAAS CNC milling machine make a keychain that they could take with them and many students were able to try their hand at mig welding during the tour!
Overall, the Manufacturing Day was a great success in allowing the CAD students to see first hand how CAD fits into the manufacturing world and how there are many career opportunities within manufacturing that directly relate to CAD.
Metals students traveled to Franchino Molding & Engineering and Munters Corporation (photos below). Students were exposed to many career and even current work opportunities. Some students even completed an application for evening and weekend employment. In fact, one student, Micah Faloon (11), has started a position with Franchino!
The Positivity Project
The Positivity Project (P2) is dedicated to empowering students to build positive relationships and become their best selves. Positive psychology’s 24 character strengths serve as its foundation. Ranging from bravery and perseverance to integrity and gratitude, the character strengths are classified and described in the 800-page book Character Strengths and Virtues. These strengths aren’t about ignoring the negative. Instead, they help us overcome life’s inevitable adversities.
Families are encouraged to follow along with the below calendar as we explore these strengths that are present in all of us. P2 for Families is a great resource that allows families to do that. The password is "p2".
