SOAR to New Heights and Go Where Eagles Dare!

Our Greatest Freedoms
Eagles,
As we approach the holiday season, I reflect on why we cherish these times and their conspicuous timeliness to winter. Years ago, the holidays came when farm life slowed down, and the focus was on surviving the winter, which meant staying close together indoors and rationing. In modern times we are not in such a life-or-death situation, so for those in education, teachers, and students alike, the holidays mean family, togetherness, and rest. In our post-pandemic world, these things have found increased value. As Joni Mitchell sang, "Don't it always seem to go, that you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone."
Despite the lower stakes, the holidays can cause tension if tied to bad memories or complicated relationships. It can leave us trapped in and surrounded by expectations of holiday cheer, making us react in not-so-cheerful ways. For those who view the holidays this way, it is crucial to find warmth and renewal where possible.
For those who find the holidays rejuvenating, expecting others to share the same enthusiasm can be taxing. It should be for us to be a guide to the willing by our example.
In any case, I am reminded of a page in a small picture book called "The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse." by Charlie Mackesy.
Tensions will rise inevitably, and how we respond will dictate much of the quality of our experience. In these cases, I have to remind myself of my greatest freedom.
I wish for all the Eagles to find warmth and rejuvenation this year!

Reflections
Choir
On Dec 3rd at Taft HS, four of our risk-taking and talented choir members auditioned for the TMEA choir region 29. Liliana, Lyberti, Lourdes, and Olivia competed amongst students from 21 districts and over 500 students. This was the first year that Woodlawn Academy had competed in the TMEA Vocal Region 29.
Congratulations to Liliana and Olivia who got selected to be part of the TMEA MS Region Choir. They ranked in the top 16 for Alto 1 section. They will be performing in a January concert.
We are so proud of our Woodlawn eagles for being risk takers and using their voice to express themselves!
PYPX Learning
This week our 5th grade student worked hard collecting data for their Exhibition research project. They crafted relevant surveys and reached our to experts to interview for more information on their topic. Some scheduled interviews include an immigration lawyer, cofounder of ImmSchools, and a video game doctor! We are so proud of the hard work our 4th graders are putting in!
