Broadcasting Club

Broadcasting Club gives OMS students the opportunity to broadcast on a variety of topics for their school and community at large. Students in the Broadcasting Club learn how to research events, write their own scripts, act on camera, film using TouchCast and green screen technology, and edit footage using iMovie. One broadcast is released each month during an extended advisory. This program features a variety of stories related to exciting school-wide and community events, seasonal activities, and issues that our very own students deem interesting and important.

The Spine Crackers Club

Just like a movie isn't the same without popcorn, a book club isn't the same without snacks. We can get creative and tie in the snacks to go with the the book we are reading. Maybe the character in the book eats a special meal or has a favorite candy. It's a wonderful way to broaden your social circle and meet people who have common interests.

Spine crackers meets the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month in room 304.

Model Congress

Junior Model Congress is a forum for students to discuss and debate issues relevant to them. Issues vary from the local level to the global level, and provide students with authentic experiences to engage in meaningful dialogue and develop evidence-based arguments.


Students have the opportunity to take a position on an issue. All like-minded students will discuss their key talking points. They will then determine a group spokesperson who will represent their perspective. The two representatives, one from each side will have an opportunity to make their claim and support that claim with relevant evidence. In addition, students not leading the debate will have the opportunity to ask questions of the opposing group's representative.

Special Events

Patriots Day

For Veterans Day, the Middle School and High School Patriots Club sold T-shirts where all proceeds were donated to the Wounded Warrior Project and Operation Homefront. Students and staff were encouraged to wear their purchased t-shirts or red, white, and blue to recognize and honor the brave men and women who have served this great nation. The Middle School Patriots Club sent cards to America's Adopt a Soldier and displayed American flags in the front of the school. These flags were generously donated by the Oceanside VFW.

Best Buddies Thanksgiving Feast

The Annual Best Buddies Thanksgiving Day Feast was held on November 10th at Oceanside High School. The entire Oceanside community came together to participate in this event to show thanks and support for the Best Buddies Clubs in the middle school and high school. Dances and songs were performed, and over 300 people attended the event!

Get Hooked on a Book

Staff and students brought in books to read to participate in Sustained Silence Reading during their advisory on November 19th. This activity, held once each month, is designed to help students Get Hooked on a Book. With over 900 participants in November, this activity resulted in over 18,000 minutes of reading.

MOVEMBER

(Movember = Moustache + November) is the month we raised awareness and money for Men's Health (Prostate Cancer, Testicular Cancer, Mental Health, and Physical Inactivity).

Participation? 25 male teachers volunteered to grow facial hair during the month of Movember. Weekly pictures were hung up in the main lobby of Oceanside Middle School so that everyone could see the progress. On November 25th, each participant came to school sporting their best moustache.


Donations? We raised $1,872, thanks to participant donations and Movember shirt sales. OMS also sold stick-on mustaches to students and staff members. We also hosted a Movember photo booth in the main lobby.


Winner? As a school, we voted for the Movember 2015 Best Moustache Winner through online surveys. The winner this year was Mr. Pumo, and his name will be engraved into the newly ordered Movember trophy!

Family Math, Science & Technology Day

Oceanside Middle School students came out in force on Saturday, November 21st to assist during Oceanside's Family Math, Science & Technology Day. We thank our wonderful students for their service to the community and commitment to helping our elementary school students engage in this outstanding community event.

OMS Thanksgiving Food Drive

Led by Team 7-4 and the Builder's Club, Oceanside Middle School students and staff organized, collected, and delivered baskets to Oceanside families. The many efforts made by our school provided strong evidence of an engaged and committed school community.

Builder's Club Donates Baskets For Thanksgiving

Oceanside Middle School Builder’s club kicked off the holiday season by collecting turkeys and all the trimmings for eight local families. All teams participated in a little friendly competition to bring in all the goods needed. Each family received all the fixings for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner and a gift certificate to local grocery stores. Oceanside Middle School staff generously donated the gift cards. Also, several teachers from the middle school donated their time to deliver the goods to each family after school before the holiday. Community service is all about giving the best of what you have. The tremendous generosity of our faculty and diligent participation by students provided local families with everything they needed for a Thanksgiving celebration.

Veggies for Veterans

Students and staff at OMS donated veggies to the veterans to show our appreciation for everything they have done and continue to do for our country. Matthew Perez, leader of this campaign, also had the opportunity to meet with County Executive Ed Mangano.

Thanksgiving Day Service

OMS students and staff came out on Thanksgiving to support the greater Oceanside community. We thank all of the students and their families for their generosity and service.

The Gratitude Tree

The dictionary defines GRATITUDE as "the quality of being thankful, readiness to show appreciation for and return kindness." The SADD Club sponsored the Gratitude Tree which was displayed in our main lobby. Every student and staff member received a leaf and filled it out saying "I am grateful for ......" The tree is an outstanding display of all of the many things OMS is thankful for.

OMS Reading Challenge

Congratulations to Marco Ancona for winning the November Reading Challenge Award! Marco's energetic approach to reading and his strongly developed book review won him a gift card to Chipotle.

Featured Team - Boys Basketball

The 7th & 8th grade boys basketball teams are looking forward to an exciting 2015-2016 season. They have been practicing extremely hard and are looking forward to the competition that they will face this season. The Sailors will be a motion style offense, where all players will contribute. Defensively, the Sailors will bring an aggressive brand of man-to-man as well as always having a strong effort rebounding the basketball. Practices have been very competitive and the players are looking forward to games.
