USD116 BOE Update: Feb. 21, 2023
from Superintendent Dr. Ivory-Tatum
Administrative Reports
10.1 Update on UHS Band Renovation Project
- So far, $100,874.41 has been raised toward the Band Renovation Project.
- There are still a couple of grant applications in progress
- Updated construction costs were presented
- Bids will be presented to the BOE on March 7
- Construction is expected to begin in May and be complete by the end of the summer
10.2 Update on Thomas Paine Elementary Renovation Project
Recommendation to add a separate bus lane for Thomas Paine using construction contingency funds. (See image below) This will also result in additional parking spaces.
10.3 Wiley Asbestos Abatement
The Board approved moving forward with asbestos abatement at Wiley for the 2023-2024 SY. We believe the fastest and best way to upgrade Wiley and begin the future renovation is to abate the asbestos while the building is closed.
Asbestos Containment Process
The building will be closed in June and sealed for asbestos containment. No one is allowed in the building at this point. The abatement will take at least 5 months. Once the building is released back to us, following abatement, we will need several months to complete the updates and replacements:
- New windows
- Ceiling tiles
- Flooring
- Plaster and drywall work
- New roof
This work will be able to move quicker with no one in the building.
Student Placements
We currently have the space to place Wiley students in our existing schools. For FY 24 we need 232 seats. The District has 600 elementary seats (342 with building caps).
Future Steps and Future Options
- Summer 2023 - 2024 Asbestos Abatement Project underway - building closed.
- Starting in Spring 2023, the Planning Committee/Board will determine if:
a. Wiley school returns to an abated and upgraded building for the 2024-25 school year while the building is being renovated as a 6th elementary
b. Wiley school returns to an abated and upgraded building for the 2024-25 school year while the new addition and reimagined section is being constructed;
3. Due to the scope of work, unforeseen project developments, and unknown available resources, there is a possibility that Wiley students and staff would remain in the space(s) they were placed beyond the 2024-25 school year.
