Jazz Band Earns Superior ratings
The Smithfield High School Jazz Band again ranked high at the District 8 Jazz Assessment with superior ratings! Judges were wowed at the students’ musicality, with one saying that this was the best they had ever heard Smithfield Jazz. Special recognition was given to Ryan Mack, who had the judges dancing in their seats with her outstanding vocal performance on Orange Colored Sky, and Shafer Melillo, who performed a beautiful flugelhorn solo in I Remember Clifford. Along with Shafer, our wonderful trumpet section, including Jasmine Johnson, Tristan Walker, and Grayson Canada, was recognized as the outstanding trumpet section of all the bands. Ryan, Shafer, Alex Muir, and Sadie Allen also made it into the Jazz Assessment All-Star Band. Mr. Syrell is extremely proud of you all and can’t wait to see how much you grow next year. Congratulations!
Blood Drive Results
The JROTC Packer Battalion completed their last blood drive of the year this past week. The American Red Cross collected 66 pints of blood, which puts SHS at 271 pints for the year -- a new record equal to saving more than 800 lives. The SHS JROTC should still retain their number one ranking in Virginia. Thank you to everyone who donated!
Congratulations, SHS debate!
The Smithfield High School Debate team once again showed up and showed out this season at the VHSL State Debate Tournament. The Policy Debate team of Sidney McAlear and Cameron Barrett placed 1st overall for the second year in a row, with Sidney placing 1st in Speaker awards and Cameron following placing 2nd in Speaker awards. The Public Forum team of Madeline Bresnahan and Mary Tomlinson made Smithfield proud by placing 3rd in their division. Lincoln Douglas debater Ayden Shannon placed a respectable 4th in a tough field of competition.
