Tuesday Notice
October 12, 2021
Dear Siskiyou School Parents,
Today we had a most wonderful Indigenous Peoples' Day assembly, in the morning sun, with frost showing on the rooftops. We'd wanted to hold it yesterday of course, but the weather was uncertain. Today was perfect, as described in the para below. In general, all seems well on campus. While the mornings have been chilly, the children are happy to arrive each day, to be together and learn and play. The teachers look forward to meeting with you later this week in conferences and sharing their observations and hearing from you as well about our most important people, your children. We look forward to seeing you on campus on Thursday and Friday; we will resume school next Tuesday, October 19th, with the excitement of the 8th grade play and Halloween right around the corner.
Our Indigenous Peoples’ Day Assembly
This morning classes 1-8 gathered in a circle on the chips to acknowledge Indigenous Peoples' Day. Ms. Tisdel spoke first, as each class listened, sitting on their tarps in the chilly but clear morning. She reminded the children that the land on which we were sitting was once just fields and grasses and the homeland of original peoples – the Takelma, Latgawa, and Siletz Tribes – who have lived here in this valley for thousands and thousands and thousands of years. She said that yesterday was the first time in the 400 years since the Europeans came that, as a nation, we officially honored those inhabitants who were here before us and live in this valley to this day. She asked if the children had heard of Chief Seattle and told them that when he was asked about his culture (as it was so different from the European way), he said that his people knew that we are all connected: the trees, animals, water, sky, rocks, insects… all of us. And that, we as people, are not the center of this web of life, but merely a strand. What we do to any part of the web, we do to ourselves. Ms. Tisdel finished by reminding us that these teachings are so very important for these times we live in today.
Then, Tish McFadden came up to share a song with us and talk briefly about Grandmother Aggie, the Takelma tribe’s oldest woman elder who died in November 2019. Tish knew Grandmother Aggie for 40 years and collaborated quite closely with her in the last years of her life. She told the children that Grandma Aggie’s native name was Taowhywee, meaning Morning Star, and that indeed Grandmother had lived up to that rising. Tish led us all in a song whose refrain goes like this:
Pass these words of the wise ones on
From voice to voice, from dawn to dawn
Pass these words of the wise ones on
The song is part of a comprehensive project that Tish worked on for five years, inspired by Grandma Aggie’s teachings. The project is called Upriver to Morning, and the 4th grade recently heard the story as part of their Native American studies. Tish ended by saying that the three things Grandmother Aggie said were most important to remember were… saying thank you to water every day, reciprocity, and learning from our ancestors how to take care of Mother Earth. Water is our first medicine, and it’s important to know how to give back and return a favor and to protect the natural balance of all life.
It was wonderful to be able to be together as a school this morning to share this special moment of acknowledgment to the indigenous people of this land. As always, these assemblies are what we could call "felt" moments, living lessons; while we can convey something of the words spoken, surely the children will mostly be left with how it felt to hear the words and the feeling with which the words were spoken. Deep thanks to both Ms.Tisdel and Tish McFadden for their holding of that moment.
Have a wonderful week, Aurilia

Thank you to all the parents who attended our very wonderful and informative Wellness Evening last week. We are so fortunate to have such qualified and amazing professionals bringing their expertise to the children of our school. We are glad that you were able to hear directly from several of them about the curriculum they bring. For your reference going forward, we attach here below, a copy of the SART curriculum that Kyndra Laughery, whom you met the other night, brings to our classes. As she explained, the Siskiyou School curriculum is similar to the safety and wellness curriculum all Oregon school children have been mandated to receive under Senate Bill 856, Erin’s Law. She has adapted that curriculum to meet our school’s needs; moreover, before each meeting with one of our classes, Kyndra checks in with the class teacher to fine-tune lessons to best meet each group. We are also attaching links to resources useful to middle school parents that Kyndra forwarded to us and a copy of the 6th-8th Grade Wellness Presentation Schedule for this fall.
Upcoming DEI Classes
Under the umbrella of our Wellness Program, we also include presentations with a specific DEI lens. For the last five years, the school has been collaborating with Gilda Montenegro-Fix, founder and senior consultant of Celebrate Diversity! a Cultural Agility consulting and training company. Here is the link to her website: https://www.celebratediversity.co/. She has run workshops and classes for our faculty at our in-services and also come to our middle school classes for presentations directly with our students. This year Gilda is away on the East Coast and was unable to attend the other night, but our school continues to work with her and her organization. In November, among other wellness presentations, our middle schoolers will have a session with a specific DEI lens presented in person by one of Gilda's collaborators, Marvin Woodard, Equity Coordinator for Racial Justice at Southern Oregon University. Marvin joined Gilda in leading a DEI workshop for the faculty this last August, so we are delighted he is in town and available to host sessions with our students in person. Gilda consulted with each of our middle school teachers and then crafted with Marvin an offering suited to each class. In keeping with the Celebrate Diversity! ethos, they will be age-appropriate, safe, responsive to the students' questions, and offered in the spirit of inclusion where everyone feels included and invited to expand in their self-awareness, other awareness, and depending on the group. Gilda communicated this about those upcoming classes:
For the 6th grade, it will mainly be a circle experience where Marvin will share about his life and invite a conversation about the unique ways in which we experience life given who we are and the time and place where we live—very much attuning to what the students bring and responding to that with an understanding of an EDI (Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) lens. In these circles, students always have the option to "pass" or participate as they wish.
For the 7th grade, we will add the use of the Diversity Wheel graphic (see attached in link below) and guide the conversation in the same style but as
appropriate, with more content offered to make sure we all know that the conversation is about all the areas of diversity. If helpful, the conversation may cover microaggressions, stereotypes, perception, etc.
For the 8th grade, we will use all of the above but also invite a conversation about what kind of world we want to live in and how to be part of that change. We believe that eliciting a vision from the students can be a powerful catalyst in their life development in all areas.”
Once again, we feel extremely fortunate to have our students led in the exploration of these important topics by such amazing and qualified professionals. (Gilda and Marvin’s bios are attached below, as well as the Diversity Wheel referred to above.)

More 8th Grade Project Mentoring Help
Tis the season! 8th graders have their ideas for their 8th grade projects and are looking for an adult who can help guide and mentor them through their project. This would involve meeting with the student 6-10 times between now and February. This week we are looking for someone to mentor a student who would love to learn how to do Make-Up, another whose first choice is the medical field, specifically EMT work, and a third, an artist, who wants to use the 8th grade project opportunity to learn specifically how to do figure drawing and portraits. If you can help with any of these, please contact me. I am helping coordinate 8th grade projects this year. It's such a pivotal experience for our students; thank you in advance for considering helping or for any leads.
My number is 541-531-3893. My email is catherinerazi@yahoo.com.

Roots to Rise
~Nurturing roots to support developmental growth~
Does your child struggle with learning challenges, sensory processing issues, ADHD, ADD, balance and coordination issues, eye tracking challenges, anxiety, melt downs, sleep issues, social and emotional challenges, weakness, fatigue, speech delay, autism, food sensitivities, PTSD? When the brain and body are not working well together, challenges arise.
Roots to Rise utilizes a holistic approach to enhance a child’s learning through supporting a healthy development of the Central Nervous System and the foundational senses (Tactile, Vestibular and Proprioception).
Children can make positive gains in attention, emotional well being, academics, coordination and balance through neurodevelopmental movements (integration of reflexes) and sensory integration. Jane Higgins, the founder of Roots to Rise has trained with Nina Gallwey, a remedial teacher at the Siskiyou school. Jane taught at the Madrone Trail School (Waldorf inspired), where she brought one class of students from first grade all the way to eighth grade.
Currently, Jane works with children one-on-one in her Roots to Rise Ashland office. Movement is brought in a playful and fun way specifically focusing on the integration of reflexes and sensory imbalances.
“In my 30 years of working with children, I’ve never seen anything transform a child’s success as I have since focusing on sensory integration, primitive and postural reflexes.”
