“We know that many of our students look forward to our Scholastic Book Fair in the spring. Since we are unable to host an in-person fair right now, we are pleased to offer an online book fair,” explains book fair chairperson Michelle Miller.
The online fair is a way to get books in the hands of students now to keep them reading at home. In addition, Sterling Grade School receives 25% of the sales in credits to buy books and materials for students to use in the library when they return to school next year.
“We really depend on our Scholastic Book Fair earnings,” explains district librarian Amy Brownlee. “Our book fair profits make up about 65% of our book budget each year. Without those earnings, we don’t have funds to purchase the books our students and teachers are requesting.” Book fair earnings also pay for reading rewards for students and almost completely fund the purchase of William Allen White (WAW) nominated books.
The WAW program is the statewide reader’s choice award for Kansas kids in grades 3-8. Students read the nominated books, vote for their favorites, and the winning authors come to Kansas to receive their award at a special ceremony. The WAW books are also used in Sterling Grade School’s Battle of the Books competition where fifth and sixth graders compete in a quiz bowl-style tournament with questions about books.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: What if I have a library book at home? When can I return it?
A: Hang on to your library book for now. We will let you know when we're ready for you to return it. It will likely be at the same time school chromebooks are returned.
Q: What about William Allen White voting?
A: William Allen White voting will happen next week. Grades 3-8, I'll send out a link and you will vote using a Google forms ballot.
Q: What about Battle of the Books?
A: Battle of the Books can’t happen with teams. However, I’m working on a plan to let kids opt in to a virtual battle where they compete individually. I will email information to 5th and 6th grade Battle of the Books team members.
Q: What about the William Allen White Ice Cream Party?
A: We won’t have a WAW ice cream party, but I still plan to reward kids who read all or nearly all the WAW books. Don’t worry about the classroom charts. I can collect info from kids through a Google form in May.
