AVA Family Update

April 28, 2023

AVA Family UpdateApril 28, 2023

Good afternoon AVA Families,

We have another standard schedule next week and it is pictured below.

In addition to my notice about academic honesty that will be a standing item on this update for a while, my only big news is for 10th graders. MCAS Math is coming up on May 16 and 17, and it is a graduation requirement and must be done in person. Unless you have heard from me directly otherwise, you will be expected to get here for both days. I will notify families and students individually by email next week as well.

The usual guidance and community updates are below and I thank you for your time.

Standing Item: Academic Honesty

I began in September with my warnings about plagiarism, and the particular temptation it offers virtual students. Over the past months, the AI chatbot issues where students submit computer generated writing pieces have been a real issue. The technology at the time certainly advantaged students who were looking to take shortcuts. Fortunately, the technology to defend against such activity has caught up, and we are now flagging assignments that are caught by the systems. Submitting AI generated responses will be dealt with the same way we have dealt with plagiarism. Students, please know our tolerance for this will be quite low going forward. Do your own work, please.
