TECHNOLOGY CAMPUS CHRONICLE
VOL 6 ISSUE 6
PRINCIPAL CORNER
Dear OSES Families,
The first day of Fall is Saturday, September 23rd. OSES, in particular our PE teachers, welcome the cooler weather. That following Thursday night is our Hispanic Heritage Night. Since 2008, this event is our first social event outside school hours. It provides parents, students, and staff an opportunity to come to the campus and meet other parents, staff, and meet some of your student’s friends (both old and new). Our school demographics remain one of the most diverse in the state of Florida, with each major ethnic group represented by approximately 25% of the student body. I’ve met several families that feel this is one of the most important qualities of our school and prepares children for the real world, or even global market.
Another outcome of school diversity is decreased disciplinary issues. “Bullies” typically target students who are different than others; at OSES, it would be hard to find the target among all the differences. Cultural differences do not hinder learning or social interactions, they add welcomed “spice” to the melting pot. Sometimes I wish we didn’t have uniforms to allow cultural expression even more so on campus (don’t tell your student).
While Hispanic Heritage will focus on one group, we hope you join us to celebrate not only Hispanics but the diversity that makes OSES a special place.
In diversity there is beauty and there is strength. -Maya Angelou

THIS WEEK IN GRADES K-6
KINDERGARTEN
Bradley
This week in social studies students discussed how their feeling can change over the course of the day. Students will also discuss how they feel in different situation within a day. In science students reviewed the 5 senses with different activities for each sense. Students demonstrated what they learned over the course of the unit.
FIRST
DiNuzzo
In first grade, we are learning about personal narratives. A personal narrative is a true story about an experience in your life. It has a beginning, middle, and end and uses words like: I, my, me, and we. At the end of the month, we will have our first Drop Everything and Write on a personal narrative. Please help us at home by having your child write about a personal experience in their life.
In Ms. DiNuzzo’s class, we are practicing our personal narratives by writing about our experiences after riding a virtual roller coaster in the classroom. The students were very excited and asked if they could continue to write!
Also, in Ms. DiNuzzo’s class we became engineers to design and build a raft to get the goats across the river from The Three Billy Goats Gruff, one of our Sunshine State Books. Please see the pictures below. Students really enjoyed this in class project.
Congratulations to the following students in Ms. DiNuzzo’s class for receiving an Xtra Math Addition and/or Subtraction certificate. Each student received a certificate, trophy, and special reward pencil. Keep up the great work!
I look forward to your child getting the next certificate!
Upcoming Projects in 1st grade:
-Some classes have completed or are currently wrapping up their Timeline Projects
-Our next grade level project will be our Sunshine State Cereal Box Projects. More details will be sent home soon.
Progress Reports were sent home today! Please return the attached AOR forms as soon as possible. This will be a participation grade in OSES Connect.
Next Tuesday, is our first Parent Teacher Conferences, we look forward to seeing everyone soon.
If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher. Have a great weekend!
SECOND
Sanico
In second grade we learned about different kinds of rocks and how rocks are formed. They were group into 4 groups and each group was given 4 different kinds of rock. They measured using the ruler, identify the textures and size. It was a fun learning activity.
THIRD
Wullschleger
The weeks are flying by and we have accomplished so much so far. We are currently working on a Novel Study called Crenshaw where students are researching the author and learning how to use a dictionary to look up difficult words.
Math has been challenging for some as we are getting to tackle multiplication and division facts.
In Science we are looking into properties of matter and learning about volume, measurement and mass.
We are looking forward to a great school year.
FOURTH
Mateer
The year is really starting to fly by! Next week, on Thursday, 4th grade will be hosting Parent Teacher Conferences. Invites are going to be sent out by email so keep an eye out for a message from your child’s teacher.
Mr. Mateer’s class is really starting to get settled in. In reading, we’re focusing on improving our comprehension skills with informational texts. We got the chance to read about the science behind sight, animal senses, and even how a dog can help a blind student get through the day.
In math, we’re zooming through multiplication. These kids know their facts! This gives us a chance as a class to focus on word problems and real-world situations.
In science, we’re learning about changes of matter: physical and chemical!
Some important upcoming dates include October 18th which is make up picture day and class picture day. Also, don’t forget to keep an eye out for Progress Reports behind sent home this Friday. Please return the attached AOR forms as soon as possible.
Have a great weekend!
FIFTH
Aramayo
This week in Mrs. Aramayo’s class students are learning about negative numbers. In learning about negative numbers, this students played a game to practice adding integers. To play the game the students draw the number of cards equal to the number of boxes they need to fill for that rounds. Then, the students choose the order that they would like to place the numbers to create the largest sum the student with the largest sum wins!
SIXTH
Jersey
Currently, in Life Science we are working on Observation, Inference, and Analyzing & Interpreting Data. Students learned how detailed Observation should be with a Mystery Box. They inferred with “fossil prints” from an improvised archeological dig. Analyzing and Interpreting data has been super sweet with using chocolate chip cookies and skittles in our labs. Next week, we will be continuing to analyze data using regular and double stuffed Oreos. We will be comparing the PH levels of Takis and Flaming Hot Cheetos. We are continuing the trend in my STEM Earth and Space Elective. Students have planned and are building an Edible Mars Rover model made with candy. The Rover must have functioning wheels and four science instruments. One of the instruments must function. My Little Einsteins Club members tested Pop rocks with different types of soda, built circuits, and found the Science in Slime. STEM Club is currently building a sustainable hut model on a “deserted Island” that must withstand wind.

Each we move through the school year, one goal we have is to continue to foster a sense of trust and safety in the school culture. OSS is a proud National School of Character, where our culture mirrors trust and safety. Character attributes help build an environment where teachers can mold positive learning experiences for all students as they acquire the knowledge needed to become successful.
The positive learning environment always comes from the key idea that we MUST all respect one another!
That means we have……
*respect a person for having a bad day;
*respect a person for having a great day;
*respect a student who studied hard to earn their grade;
*respect the teacher who put a lot of time and planning into their lessons or units;
*respect that we are all Orlando Science Orcas.
*respect yourself and hold yourself accountable
If we can all commit to this, our school culture will continue to be a safe, trustworthy environment where academics and school pride flourish.
