1/22 BHS Tiger News
Belleville High School
Belleville High School
Good afternoon, BHS Families! This is Week #19 of First Semester. THANK YOU to all who attended the Tiger Parent Meeting last Wednesday. We had a better turnout of 28 families, as compared to the 6 from before. Again, with 1800 students, our students and staff need greater participation from our families in order to achieve the greatness that we know we're capable of. Teamwork makes the dream work! Our next meeting is February 15th at 6:30pm.
The next 1 1/2 weeks will be finalizing Power Standards and reviewing for Midterm Exams. Exams are on Thursday, Feb 2nd (hours 1-3) and Friday, Feb 3rd (Hours 4-6). At this time, students should have all assignments turned in and makeups completed. Parents and guardians please be sure, when you check your student's grades, to also check their ABSENCES and TARDIES. This is becoming an opportunity for improvement. Please see the "Hall Sweeps" section below.
MIDTERM EXAM DAY PROTOCOL -
You must be ON TIME (in the classroom before the bell begins to sound). Late students will report to the Mini-Auditorium. Make arrangements to take missed exam(s) later with your teacher.
No Passes will be given during exams.
Students who miss an exam must make arrangements with their teacher within 24 hours, being respectful of the time it takes to process.
Students who completely fail to take an exam will receive an “E” grade (which is 20% of their Semester grade).
As always, communication with your teacher(s) is key!
Thank you for your attention to the information in this week's newsletter. Have a wonderful week, and GO TIGERS!!
~ Principal Crockett, AP Mrs. Green, AP Mr. Roberson, AP Ms. Slingerland, BNT Director Mr. Wilsey, and Athletic Director Mr. Brodie
HALL SWEEPS
- Due to an apparent comfortability with getting to class late, BHS will be returning to Hall Sweeps. Students caught in the halls after the late bell has rung will be scheduled to serve SAME DAY DETENTIONS. Parents and guardians, please speak with your student about the Excellence that being on time exhibits. Timeliness is a life skill that speaks to dependability and responsibility!
- Also, this is a reminder that SCHOOL STARTS AT 7:10am. We are getting an abundance of students coming to school and being dropped off late - which negatively affects their learning, other students' learning, and the classroom environment as a whole. We believe in our students, and their ability to be great. It starts every day at 7:10am!
Important Dates and Upcoming Events:
February 2nd-3rd: Midterm Exams, Hours 1-3 on 2/2 and Hours 4-6 on 2/3

Michigan Career Pathways and National Career Clusters
Career Pathways are careers that are grouped together because many of the people in them share similar interests and strengths. All pathways include a variety of occupations that require different levels of education and training. Selecting a Career Pathway provides a focus into which one can begin directing energies and determining a tentative career “fit” though it is always acceptable to change one’s mind. By identifying with a pathway students are aided in selecting courses, extra-curricular activities and part-time employment. Career Pathways provide a plan for all students regardless of their interests, abilities, talents, or desired levels of education. All pathways have equal dignity.
During the Month of January we are highlighting the Arts and Communication Pathway
Careers in this pathway are related to humanities and performing, visual, literary, and media arts. These include architecture, graphics, interior and fashion design, writing, film, fine arts, journalism, languages, media, advertising, and public relations.
If you are a creative thinker, imaginative, innovative, and original this may be the career path for you!

Still Need Help with the FAFSA?
As your seniors are wrapping up their college applications and planning for their future it is important to get the FAFSA submitted in order to take advantage of federal and state funding available to your students. If you and your student need any assistance in filing the FAFSA, the college adviser is available by appointment on Thursday evenings between 5:30 and 7:30, she just asks that you use this google form to sign up: https://forms.gle/rvpRxg278tqbR1RP9. If you have any questions, please email our college adviser, Dr. Sydney Rosenblum, at collegeadviser@vanburenschools.net.
For those who think their student might not qualify for financial aid, this year, the state of Michigan launched a massive investment into the education of the class of 2023 and beyond called the Michigan Achievement Scholarship. This scholarship grants funding to students enrolled in 2-year or 4-year colleges or universities in MI or eligible training providers (select trade and vocational schools) and is need-based, but they raised the need threshold by a significant amount so they estimate that 80% of the class of 2023 will be eligible! See the attached flyer for more information.

Message for Seniors
Seniors - Admissions Decisions - Breathe!
In anticipation of many college admissions decisions that will come out in the next several weeks, I wanted to share a few thoughts. Some of you will get the news you were hoping to hear and others will be deferred or not accepted. Please be reminded in everything that:
1. "NO" means "New Opportunity."
2. Often out of rejection, comes our greatest direction.
3. Everything always works out. Breathe.
4. Every time I thought I was being rejected from something, I was redirected toward something that was better!
Most people have taken many risks and in return, they have learned resiliency, determination, and fortitude. It's those "rejection" moments in life that have made them stronger. These moments teach us so much!
Good luck to all of you seniors who are still waiting to hear... just remember that your "plan" may be filled with other amazing opportunities...don't forget to trust in what life has in store! We are here to support you, so please reach out and let us know how we can help!
Seniors - Is your college asking for "Verification" after filling out the FAFSA?
Don't Panic!
If you get a notification that you've been selected for verification after filling out the FAFSA, do not panic. It is quite common and it just means you need to provide additional documentation. Pay attention to the deadline and get your information submitted!

Therapy is available for students and youth ages 10-21 that reside in the Van Buren School District.
In person and virtual appointments are available. Program hours are:
- Monday & Tuesday 7:30am - 3:30pm,
- Tuesday 7:30am- 2:30pm,
- Wednesday 7:30am - 7:30pm and
- Friday 7:30am - 12:30pm.
BHS Clubs and Activities!
Did you know that BHS has a wealth of clubs and activities?! For high school students, belonging to at least one group and forming healthy relationships with adults and other students with similar interests proves beneficial - both during their high school years as well as in future years. Encourage your student to GET INVOLVED!

Welcome, Ms. Slingerland!
We would like to welcome Ms. Paula Slingerland as the newest edition to the Administrative Team! She has been one of our devoted English instructors in Belleville New Tech and is taking over as the Acting Assistant Principal for Mr. Dan Wright. Mr. Wright has been assigned to an Interim District Safety and Security position. We would like to say "Congratulations" to them both in their new roles!
Morning and Afternoon Traffic Flow Reminder
GREAT NEWS! In addition to our Tuesday/Thursday Homework Lab and Tutoring options for after school, we are now introducing the teacher-led Tutoring schedule. Students report directly to the designated teacher's classroom after school. CLICK HERE for the Tutoring Schedule, and revisit often for updates.
DRESS CODE - By now, some of you have received an email saying that your student has received a Dress Code violation. While these are minor infractions (typically for wearing a hood in the building or wearing a crop top or pajama pants), they can add up! Please be sure to speak with your student if they are receiving multiple of these emails. Besides academics, we are also teaching employability skills - which in many cases includes following a workplace dress code. Thank you for your support!
SCHOOL SAFETY
BUILDING, STUDENT, AND STAFF SAFETY
In light of recent events, and as a firm reminder of a couple of our safety basics please be intentional about discussing these two with your student(s).
Building Entrances/Locked Doors: All entry doors in the building lock at 7:10am. After this, the only doors that may be utilized are at the Main Entrance. Students are not to open, leave from, nor prop open building doors. Failure to follow these safety protocols results in immediate suspension.
Metal Detecting Wands: BHS began last year and continues this year utilizing wands as a metal detection option. These wand searches will take place in randomly selected classrooms during randomly-selected hours. Our goal is to continue to build upon our swift, yet thorough process to help detect anything that could be deemed as potentially dangerous. We believe that the random selection process will be more effective than announced, routine, or predictable searches. These "wanding" events will be attended and supervised by our local law enforcement.
TRUANCY - 5 Day Letters
NOTICE: Any family who receives a 5 Day Truancy Letter has a student who is at risk of failing the semester, and has a higher risk of not completing high school. PLEASE reach out to your student's counselor or assistant principal if your student is having issues with attendance. There may be solutions that haven't been considered yet. Don't let it turn into a 10 day problem...
Per the Student Handbook, any student who is absent from school for all or any part of the day without a legitimate excuse will be considered truant. All students and parents are subject to the truancy laws of the State. If a student, under the age of eighteen (18), is truant for more than ten (10) total days during a semester, he/she may be reported to the appropriate authorities. As a courtesy, BHS will send letters for any student who has been absent for 5 days.
ABSENCE NOTIFICATIONS:
ATTENTION PARENTS AND GUARDIANS: If you receive an attendance notice via phone or text, this means your student MISSED AT LEAST ONE CLASS that day. If it was not approved by a parent/guardian, this is cause for a follow up with them. Tardies will be handled through the general discipline policy checklist as a minor infraction.
STUDENT HANDBOOK AND DRESS CODE
An excellent educational experience is always undergirded by a safe and orderly environment. Please take the time to review the Student Handbook, which includes the BHS Student Dress Code. For a quick review of items to avoid, please click the link for COMMON DRESS CODE VIOLATIONS.
In particular, students will not be wearing:
- Hoods
- Crop Tops
- Ski Masks
- or any bedwear or grooming attire, including pajamas or pajama bottoms, hair scarves or durags.
