Fisher Family Update
September 22, 2023

Dear Fisher Families,
It was fantastic to see all the parents and guardians that attended our first Parent Advisory Council meeting of the year on Wednesday night! We had a great meeting and it was exciting to hear all that PAC has planned for our students and teachers this year. HERE are the minutes from the meeting. PAC is always looking for adults to get involved in any way possible and I encourage you to learn more at our upcoming Open House/Curriculum Night on Thursday, October 5th. PAC will have a table set up and you could speak with one of the board members who will ber sharing information about the volunteer opportunities offered this year. PAC is a huge part of what makes Fisher School such a special place and we hope to see you in our school and at the special events throughout the year!
Have a great weekend,
Brian

Literacy Screener for Grades K-3
Our teachers have many ways to check your child’s reading development and growth, including an early literacy universal screening assessment. Early literacy universal screening assessments are brief tests that provide information about your child’s early reading skills.
Screening makes it possible to see if a student is at risk of developing reading difficulties, including risk of dyslexia. Screening does not diagnose dyslexia or other disabilities, but it does help us understand which students may need additional support to be successful readers. We are required to assess students in grades K-3 at least twice per year consistent with Massachusetts regulation 603 CMR 28.03(1)(f).
Our district uses the screening assessment called iReady. This screening assessment is approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Your child will be assessed two or three times during the school year, depending on grade level. Grades 1-3 will be given the computer adaptive assessment in the Fall. Kindergarten will be given the computer adaptive assessment in the Winter. Assessments given in the Winter and Spring will also include offline literacy task assessments for grades K-3.
The tentative schedule for this school year is shown below.
Screening Assessment Months (Subject to Change)
Kindergarten
1. January
2. May
Grade 1 - Grade 3
1. September
2. January
3. May
Following the screening assessment, a team at our school will review all students’ results. If your child scores significantly below benchmarks, we will contact you to discuss how we can support your child.
Screening is another step that helps students at our school become proficient readers, and we are grateful for the continued support and partnership with the [School Name] families. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
New Staff Spotlight
Each week will be introducing you to staff that are new to Fisher. This week's highlight is Mrs Terranova.
Hello! My name is Katie Terranova and I am the new fifth grade teacher at Fisher! This is my sixth year teaching and I am super excited to be teaching at Fisher! My husband and I live in Franklin with our dog, Silvio! In my free time I love going to the beach and hanging out with friends and family. I am looking forward to a great year!
Notes from the Health Office
Health Office Handout- All student(s) received a medical permission form at school this week. Please fill out the attached medical permission form and update your child’s health history for the 2023-24 school year. Please place your initials next to the medications listed on the form and authorize permission for the school nurse to administer medications as needed. The health office will contact you with any concerns before administering pain medication, regardless of consent.
Please sign the form and return it to the health office as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me (LMoyes@walpole.k12.ma.us).
Grade 4 Families- A Health History was sent home this week in addition to the medication administration consent. It needs to be completed by you for your child’s school health record. Even if you have sent in a report of a physical examination, we need this information, some of which is not included on the physical exam report. Please include any information regarding physical or emotional issues which might affect your child’s well-being.
Please complete and return it at your earliest convenience.
