The IMS Connection
Volume 15, Issue 7: March 2019
Mark your calendar: Superintendent's Conference Day is Monday, March 18, 2019. There is no school for students.
Dear Parents and Guardians:
As of this writing, we have been very fortunate in regard to the weather, at least compared to the rest of the country. For this reason, our school calendar has not changed. Weather permitting; students will be able to go outside for recess. They will need to have long sleeve shirts through March to go outside.
The 100 Minutes of Motion sponsored by the IDEA task force was a great success. Nearly 100 fifth and sixth graders joined us in an evening of fun. Thanks to all of our IDEA Task Force volunteers, the AHA high school students, and IMS NJHS members for making this event a success. The next IDEA event is March 22, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., for grades 6th - 8th at the HS. Please go to the school store for permission slips. Details are below.
As the days grow longer, it is not uncommon for students to start getting out and about after school. Outside activity is always encouraged. Students riding bikes should always wear helmets. Bicycle racks are located in the front of the building between the main entrance area and the academic wing.
At this time of year, it is not unusual to see groups of students leaving school to visit local merchants. Children should always cross at the crosswalks. As a reminder, students who leave school grounds are not permitted to take late buses. Please have the children make other arrangements.
As usual, please reach out to me with any questions or concerns. Email me at tmartin@islipufsd.org or call 631-650-8505.
Until next month, be safe and stay positive as we approach warmer weather.
Kind regards,
Timothy P. Martin

Although there is snow on the ground as I write this, spring is actually just around the corner. As we approach a new season, we continue to stay focused on our yearlong project of enhancing student climate and culture. Last month, our committee analyzed the results from our most recent student survey.
Although we have still have a lot to work on, we celebrated some key improvements from last spring:
· 14% more students feel that students who are different are still treated well
· 16% more students feel that students at IMS treat each other kindly
· 13% more students feel that the adults in their school care about them
· 7% more students feel that the climate at IMS is positive
March will also mark our second installment of our IMS Buccaneer Roundtable. Representatives from each grade will meet with school administration and select teachers to share their thoughts and feelings on how we might improve the IMS experience. We look forward to hearing what our students have to say about how we can make IMS a better place.
The New York State ELA exam will take place from April 1-8, with an AM and PM session on each day. Please note that this year ALL students must report at their regularly scheduled time and that we will not be following the two-hour delayed opening schedule as we have in the past.
Spring brings new opportunities to get involved and turn over a new leaf. We look forward to a great season and as always, feel free to reach out to me via e-mail or phone with any questions or concerns.
Advisory Theme of the Month:
Respect...This comes in all shapes and sizes. There can never be too much respect displayed to people in our schools, our families, or our community. Please share with your children how respect can go a long way towards making our world a better place.

Band:
The Islip Middle School Band program has had an exciting year so far! The 6th Grade Band had an amazing time performing at MacArthur airport spreading holiday cheer to the bustling travelers (and a crowd of very supportive parents) this past December. This past January some of our talented 6th Grade French hornists performed at the SCMEA Day of Horn! They had to prepare and perform special music alongside over 100 other French horn players from all over Suffolk County! The 7/8th grade band is busily preparing for the High Note Festival which they will be performing at in Bristol, CT this coming May! They will be adjudicated as well as have an opportunity to have some fun at Lake Compounce Amusement Park! The IMS Jazz Band has been working hard all year as they gear up to enter the busiest time of year for them! Gig season! Look out for them at the Festival of the Arts as well as on the upcoming Spring Concert!
Chorus:
The Middle School Chorus’ are preparing for our Spring Concerts!
Both the sixth grade, and seventh and eighth grade combined groups, performed extremely well in the Winter Concerts. The Spring Concerts bring Broadway selections, madrigals, pop music, and even an Irish lullaby to our Middle School stage.
Please look at the school calendar for May and save the dates for these upcoming events that showcase some wonderful talent here at Islip. We look forward to seeing you in the spring.
