Back to The Basics with Reading and Writing Workshop!
ALL Structures in Workshop Style Teaching is important!
During classroom visits, I will be looking for the following Workshop Structures:
Next Steps for Writing Workshop: Increasing Students' Independence & Accountability
Voice-Overs: Extend the Link segment of the Writing Mini-Lesson
Nothing like actively coaching students while they're in the game! Going into unit 2, we will extend the link portion by 5 minutes to allow students to start their writing while you lift the level of their writing by using voice-overs push students' thinking and lift the level of student's writing volume and ideas.
K-3 SeeSaw Interactive Digital Journals/ 4-5 One Note Journals
Students deserve choice and voice over how they want to present their writing each day! Some students prefer to write, and some prefer to type! It's all good either way, but you as their teacher, need to be able to access their writing to give feedback. Students will be equipped next unit with all the tools they need during independent writing, and teachers will be able to monitor students' progress towards mastery!

What is Math in Practice?
Sometimes we look back to the "good old days" of teaching math with rose-colored glasses. But did everyone learn and love mathematics in those classrooms? What do you remember about math class when you were a student? What was a typical assignment? What did your classroom look like and sound like? As I listen to teachers across the country, I am struck by the similarity of their experiences as they recall:
- lots of memorizing
- long worksheets
- silent practice
- a teacher telling how to do it
- one right answer
- one way to get the answer
- no group work
- no manipulatives.
We know that one of biggest changes in the teaching of math is a new definition of proficiency. Computation skills are still important, but it takes more than that. We want our students to understand why math works.

AVID Strategy of the Month:Collaboration
Structures that support Collaboration Virtually
- Create Table Channels in Teams (I suggest creating 5 tables, in which you predetermine who will consistently link up at the tables when it's collaboration time)
- Nearpod's Collaboration Activities: Example: Collaboration board
