SHES Weekly Update
Sunday, October 31, 2021
Hello SHES Families!
This past Monday and Tuesday, we welcomed math coaches into our classrooms from Math Transformations. Our teachers worked with a coach on their instructional routine of Number Talks with the goals of:
Asking good questions
Listening to student thinking
Noticing the important “mathematical moments” when students share their thinking
Facilitating student-to-student discourse
Recording student thinking
Fostering curiosity about quantities, numbers, and operations
Building number sense and procedural fluency
On Friday, our students came ready to celebrate. We saw so many creative costumes and our Halloween Parade was a HUGE success. PTA was tasked with the impossible of finding the best costumes. Students were called at the end of the day to get their prizes and take pictures.
November 1 to 5th, we are hosting SHES Red Ribbon Week. Each day has its own theme.
- Monday, November 1 - Twin Day + classes will tie ribbons to the fence out front as our campus commitment to be drug free.
- Tuesday, November 2 - Wear Red Day + PTA will provide temporary tattoos, stickers, and arm bands for every student
- Wednesday, November 3 - Crazy Hair and Sock Day + BMX Assembly during school!
- Thursday, November 4 - Pajama Day
- Friday, November 5 - SHES Spirit Day + class contest for most participation.
Día de los Muertos
“Día de los Muertos—the Day of the Dead—is a holiday celebrated November 1 - November 2. Although marked throughout Latin America, Dia de los Muertos is most strongly associated with Mexico, where the tradition originated.
Día de los Muertos honors the deceased with festivals and lively celebrations. It’s a typically Latin American custom brought to the region by Spanish conquistadores.
Assured that the deceased would be insulted by mourning or sadness, Día de los Muertos celebrates the lives of the deceased with food, drink, parties, and activities the deceased enjoyed in life. Dia de los Muertos recognizes death as a natural part of the human experience, a continuum with birth, childhood, and growing up to become a contributing member of the community.
The most familiar symbol of Día de los Muertos may be the calacas and calaveras (skeletons and skulls), which appear everywhere during the holiday: in candied sweets, as parade masks, as dolls. Calacas and calaveras are almost always portrayed as enjoying life, often in fancy clothes and entertaining situations.
If your family would like to learn more, Old Town San Diego usually hosts an event each year at the end of October. You can look it up online for 2021. Also- “Coco” & “The Book of Life” are both great movies for kids that pertain to this theme.
PBIS Survey
As many of you know, our school follows the Positive Behavior and Supports Model (PBIS), where we have three school rules: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible. Once a trimester, we evaluate our work through the eyes of our third through fifth-grade students and all grade level families to continually improve our school's climate. We never want to stop growing. We are asking for students and families to take their respective anonymous surveys to evaluate, learn, and move forward together to make SHES the best school it can be. Students will be taking the survey in class during the week of November 8-12, 2021. If parents do not wish for their child to participate, please print out and return the PBIS Survey Opt-Out Form to your child's teacher by November 5, 2021. Below are the questions that your student will be asked:
