One More Week to Go!
With one week left until February Vacation, CMS teachers are squeezing it all in! Grade 7 social studies was making models of Asia out of playdough, a tactile way to help students gain an understanding of Geography and what topographical maps show us. Last week as part of our Africa Unit, 7th grade students studied indigenous African religions. Common among indigenous African religions from areas around the continent is the use of masks. Students learned about how the masks are made and what they are used for. They then had the chance to explore museum collections of African masks and learn more about masks from more specific indigenous groups. Finally, students designed their own masks including symbolism from their own lives as well as a connection to Africa, either the people, history, or environment. Grade 6 made Valentines for members of the armed forces. A great way to practice writing skills and provide a moment of uplift for our service members. Grade continued to read and perform The Hobbit, there were some truly fantastic performances of the Great Goblin and Gandolf, I sense some dramatics coming ahead!
Many classes also incorporated Black History Month. This week the entire district will be celebrating Black History Month with a series of school wide lessons and some spirit days!
