Christine Grant End of Year Update
A review of our school year in the Library
A Note From Mrs. Panther
Grizzlies,
Where did the time go? We sure did have our share of excitement this year. We started with a brand new building and ended in a pandemic. Regardless, we had a great year at Christine Grant. It has been an honor to be your Librarian and I cannot wait to see what next school year brings!
Delivery Day
So many boxes..so many boxes. This is the beginning of the Christine Grant Library! It was so much fun to get the collection ready for this space. Thanks to the Iowa City Community School District for supporting such amazing student centered libraries and collections.
Visitng Author
Our 3rd and 4th graders had the pleasure of meeting and getting to talk with Melissa Sweet this year. Thanks to our sponsors in continuing to support the growth of literacy with our students.
Storybook Pumpkin Contest
Our inaugural "Storybook Pumpkin Contest" was a huge success. We had 45 entrants and then staff voted on their favorite. This one was "Grizzly Great".
Other Library Events
- Paper Roller Coasters - our 6th graders designed and started to build paper roller coasters after they completed some research on physics and design, using Science Flix.
- Our 5th graders were encouraged to work in small groups on designing their own "Futuristic"house, car or school based on the book series "If I Built.." from Chris Van Dusen.
- The Christine Grant Library was blessed to see Kindergarten two times a week. Little did we know at the beginning of the year that their extra computer lab time would come into play so quickly. With the extra library time afforded each week our Kindergartners were able to slip into distance learning with little educational interruption.
- Our 3rd graders were introduced to our districts new typing curriculum "Typing Club" with a "Typing Bootcamp". Students were shown proper typing technique and worked on increasing their speed and accuracy.
Optimist Good Reader
Here is a photo album of our amazing 3rd and 4th grade students who received certificates from the Coralville Optimist Club. Our students were challenged to expand their reading choices both in and out of the classroom. During their Library lessons we looked at different, relatively unexplored genres to help introduce students to genres that were not necessarily their first choice to read. It was a great program, that due to our winter weather, had to be a little abbreaviated, but our students stood strong and many went above and beyond.
